His 2006 three-dimensional lithograph <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/art\/prints-works-on-paper\/more-prints-works-on-paper\/red-grooms-ruckus-tugboat\/id-a_3005471\/\"><em>Ruckus Tugboat<\/em><\/a>, created with fine-art printer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/dealers\/sharks-ink\/\">Shark\u2019s Ink<\/a>, is a prime example.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Equal parts sculpture and print, satire and celebration, the piece features the<em> Lysiane<\/em>, a tugboat chugging through New York Harbor packed with Grooms\u2019s trademark cast of misfits and tiny dramas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From a man overboard flailing in the water to a mob victim sinking below the surface to a shark lunging for a frightened fish, the scene captures the city\u2019s rowdy energy with comical grit and extraordinary detail.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/red-grooms\/art\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"950\" height=\"797\" reveals a zany cast of characters.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cRed Grooms came to our studio in 2006 with a maquette that he had made with paper, glue and watercolor,\u201d recalls Roseanne Colachis, director of Shark\u2019s Ink. \u201cThis piece was then taken apart and laid out flat so that we could trace the individual parts and make a key lithographic plate.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Printmakers Bud Shark (he of the eponymous studio) and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/evan-colbert\/\">Evan Colbert<\/a> pressed the lithograph from 12 aluminum plates. \u201cEach color was hand-drawn by the artist for the edition and after printing,\u201d says Colachis, who then cut, scored and folded the paper and placed the completed piece in a Plexiglas box. \u201cI&#8217;ve put together almost all of the 3D prints and have loved every minute of assembling them,\u201d she adds. <\/p>\n\n\n<div since 1981, collaborating on more than 50 prints, many of them sculptural, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/art\/prints-works-on-paper\/more-prints-works-on-paper\/red-grooms-ruckus-taxi\/id-a_3053231\/\"><em>Ruckus Taxi<\/em><\/a> the following year. \u201cHe is one of my favorite artists,\u201d Colachis says. <em>Ruckus Tugboat<\/em>, produced in an edition of 45, reflects Grooms\u2019s inimitable wit and devotion to portraying the nuttiness of city life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The term <em>ruckus<\/em> has become shorthand for Grooms\u2019s unruly aesthetic and a recurrent theme for him over the past 50 years. Photo by Paula Abreu Pita. \u00a9 Red Grooms \/ Mimi Gross \/ Artists Rights Society<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With its flaming downtown skyscrapers, Times Square sex shops and wacky cast of New Yorkers (including the Statue of Liberty in heels), the piece distilled 1970s Manhattan into an immersive caricature \u2014 sculpted, painted and smirking back at you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Right now, the Brooklyn Museum is revisiting <em>Ruckus Manhattan<\/em> in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brooklynmuseum.org\/exhibitions\/ruckus-manhattan\">Ruckus-centric show<\/a> marking New York\u2019s 400th anniversary (up through November 2). Among the highlights is <em>Dame of the Narrows<\/em>, a wild scene centering on a Staten Island Ferry that had a major role in the original installation and is in the museum\u2019s collection. Like <em>Ruckus Tugboat<\/em>, it\u2019s a maritime tribute to the city\u2019s surreal \u201970s-era grit, rendered with a wink and a poke.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201c \u2018Ruckus\u2019 comes from a slight disorder of things,\u201d Colachis says, understatedly.
