From grungy streetwear to crisp designer minimalism, \u201990s style has had a hold on today’s fashion for some time. The latest throwback trend? Chunky loafers, according to Vogue<\/em><\/a>. Loafers<\/a> and the various footwear that falls into the same broad category \u2014 driving shoes<\/a>, which saw a comeback this spring, for instance \u2014 are a perennial favorite. Still, chunky loafers have an attitude that flips the academic, sometimes stuffy standard model on its head, which is why celebs are reaching for them more and more these days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While a moccasin loafer can feel preppy, a chunky loafer has a tougher personality, regardless of material or color. And designers are putting their spin on the style. Always fond of color, Marni<\/a> created a padded purple pair<\/a> that celebrates the shoe’s cartoonish profile. Another Marni rendition<\/a>, in a brick, white and black color scheme, is similarly playful, although its lug sole gives it a slight grunge edge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bottega Veneta<\/a>, meanwhile, doubled down on the shoe’s bulkiness by adding three tassels to its version<\/a>. Celine<\/a>\u2019s polished-leather model<\/a> and Chanel<\/a>\u2019s interpretation, flaunting the brand’s interlocking C logo<\/a>, are primmer takes but still benefit from that heavy sole’s distinctive mood. Regardless of the particular pair, chunky loafers have a versatility and practicality that will come in handy this fall.<\/p>\n\n\n\t
