The always-daring designer Robert Couturier<\/a> played with contrasts across centuries in a spacious Fifth Avenue apartment<\/a>, in New York City. \u201cThe entire apartment has a very traditional French background, with lots of 20th-century furnishings<\/a>,\u201d he says. \u201cWe painted the living room\u2019s early-19th-century paneling<\/a> in late-1960s colors<\/a> \u2014 a foot in both eras!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s a daring and unexpected time warp that somehow works, even several years after its completion. \u201cThe paneling of the room was so geometrical that it called out for a curve!\u201d Couturier says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Vladimir Kagan<\/a> sofa provides that relief, as it stretches around a tubular reflective cocktail table by Mattia Bonetti<\/a>. A Louis XIV<\/a> armchair, custom upholstered and painted in sync with the orange-and-white walls, and a mirrored fireplace surround<\/a> inspired by Emilio Terry<\/a> fill out the spirited ensemble.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cRound or curved furniture is super inviting and comfy,\u201d Couturier says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In their exuberant Omaha home<\/a>, Mark and Mikal Eckstr\u00f6m \u2014 the duo behind Studio Eckstr\u00f6m<\/a> \u2014 turned a long room just off the foyer into a guest reception area that doubles as a bar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To offset the architecture\u2019s straight lines, they layered in vivaciously swooping pieces. \u201cWe love curvaceous furnishings as they\u2019re infinitely sexy and they break the rectilinear lines of a room,\u201d says Mark.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the center is a vintage borne settee<\/a>, chosen to serve as a site for happy-hour t\u00eate-\u00e0-t\u00eates. \u201cThe settee is a perfect spot to perch \u2014 cocktail in hand \u2014 and share secrets,\u201d he adds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A cascading glass side table by Laurel Fyfe<\/a> introduces another wavelike accent, and a pair of Italian 1970s cabinets<\/a>, sourced from MORENTZ<\/a> via 1stDibs, flank a large-format Sasha Eisenman photograph of a post-party interior that reinforces the room\u2019s wild, maximalist aura.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Waldo Works Studio<\/a> founder Tom Bartlett was asked to design the interiors of a five-story London townhouse<\/a> reworked by architecture firm Michaelis Boyd<\/a> to suit it to serve as a couple’s city base.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the ground floor, the great room combines living and dining spaces, separated by Franco Albini\u2019s Veliero bookcase<\/a> for Cassina<\/a>, which nods to the clients\u2019 passion for iconic mid-century design.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pieces with sinuous outlines soften the room\u2019s hard edges. A vintage discoid Willy Rizzo<\/a> coffee table sits on a Christopher Farr<\/a> rug, paired with a crescent-shaped Vladimir Kagan<\/a> sofa and a B&B Italia<\/a> armchair beneath Ingo Maurer<\/a>\u2019s three-layered paper pendant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cCurvy furniture is actually very practical in longer, more narrow spaces \u2014 which you find a lot in \u2018knocked-through\u2019 terraced London townhouses,\u201d the designer says. \u201cThey allow the flow around living room pieces to be more natural as you have to move about the house.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Artworks by Becky Beasley and Lizzie McAlpine, along with a cloudlike pendant<\/a> above the dining table, round out the lengthy space. \u201cThere is a certain louche \u201970s quality to it,\u201d Bartlett adds of curvy furniture, \u201cwhich always feels quite appealing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Interior architect Elizabeth Steimberg<\/a> opened up the first floor of a European couple\u2019s penthouse duplex<\/a> in New York’s Chelsea neighborhood to create a luminous, loft-like expanse \u201cwhere the kitchen, dining area, TV room, living room and terrace flow in a casual and relaxed way,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the living room, as a counterpoint to the architecture\u2019s strong angles, she deployed seating defined by graceful arcs: a B&B Italia<\/a> sofa in red velvet paired with one from Roche Bobois<\/a> upholstered in custom black-and-white Studio Four fabric, set around a coffee table made by a Japanese artisan and purchased on 1stDibs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Completing this conversation ring are twin low-slung Poul Kj\u00e6rholm<\/a> chairs and a 1950s Arredoluce<\/a> Triennale floor lamp<\/a>, all from 1stDibs. \u201cWhat I love about the round furniture is how it creates a break into the more rigid hard lines in the angular space,\u201d Steimberg says. \u201cCurves are sexy, soft and inviting.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This entry in an Upper East Side apartment<\/a> updated by Monica Fried<\/a> makes a striking first impression. A long oval bench by Cuff Studio, upholstered in boucl\u00e9, stretches across the wall on a rounded wooden base.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Suspended above, a plaster ceiling light by Pierre Augustin Rose<\/a> crowns the space with undulating natural texture. On the wall, an abstract canvas by Sam Moyer<\/a>, featuring seven circular forms floating on a field of pale blue, brings energy and movement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe love the juxtaposition of the geometric parquet floors and the curvy bench and plaster ceiling fixture in this Upper East foyer,\u201d says Fried. \u201cThe atmospheric Sam Moyer painting adds to the circular drama.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a 1920s Park Avenue apartment<\/a> in Manhattan, Jeremiah Brent<\/a> designed a living room defined by smooth forms. At its heart is a Vladimir Kagan sofa<\/a>, whose boomerang shape seems to hug the space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Across from it, burnt-orange mohair swivel chairs<\/a> add a bold chromatic punch, while a serpentine 1940s Baumann screen<\/a> plays with shadow and movement. A contemporary Gloria Cortina<\/a> cabinet acts as a foil for the ensemble with its sharp geometry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Brent\u2019s approach relies on balancing intentional tensions. \u201cI love the juxtaposition of it all,\u201d he says<\/a> of mixing pieces from different eras and styles. \u201cEnsure that there\u2019s a cohesive thread throughout the space, whether it\u2019s flooring, wall color or lighting. That consistency will tie together any unexpected layers of design.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the primary suite of a Silicon Valley family home<\/a>, Heather Hilliard<\/a> emphasized comfort, while introducing a dab of femininity. Custom walnut paneling<\/a> provides a linear backdrop for layers of sumptuousness supplied by bespoke details like a Holland & Sherry<\/a>\u2013upholstered headboard, Pierre Frey<\/a>\u2013trimmed shams and a hide rug by Kyle Bunting<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To counter all the straight edges, Hilliard introduced pieces with rounded contours: Piet Boon<\/a> barrel-back chairs, a Nickey Kehoe<\/a> circular coffee table and rippling Paul Ferrante<\/a> sconces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe introduced the rounded pink chairs and curved sconces to add softness and as a nod to the lady of the house,\u201d the designer explains. \u201cRounded profiles allow for movement through the space, making the setting feel more relaxing and serene.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rachel Laxer<\/a> reconceived a London apartment<\/a> as a study in unconventional shapes and lush fabrics. In the living room, two rounded sofas strike up a dialogue: Charles Zana<\/a>\u2019s Alexandra sectional, upholstered in oxblood-red Pierre Frey mohair, brings plush depth, while a wave-like Italian t\u00eate-\u00e0-t\u00eate from Watteeu<\/a> embodies a more fluid gesture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cTogether, they create balance and set the tone for the rest of the home,\u201d Laxer says<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Custom circular coffee tables sit at the core of the grouping. Next to the Zana sectional are two tripod side tables: a velum one from Paolo Moschino<\/a> and a bronze and shagreen piece. A moon jar vase adds a hand-thrown accent, while a floral Hands rug<\/a>, a textured Phillip Jeffries wallcovering<\/a> and a three-dimensional wall work from the client\u2019s collection form an organic backdrop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cCurved furniture softens a room and makes it more inviting,\u201d Laxer says. \u201cThese forms are generous, they encourage flow, and they bring people together.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
