Deep-green paint covers the frame of the banquette and the board-lined ceiling, further defining the cozy corner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/rupert-bevan\/furniture\/\">Rupert Bevan<\/a> crafted the tulip-like table, which is paired with a custom banquette topped by a cushion in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/rose-tarlow\/furniture\/\">Rose Tarlow<\/a> velvet and pillows in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/introspective-magazine\/zak-and-fox\/\">Zak + Fox<\/a> fabrics. Given that townhomes are often linear in plan, showcasing furnishings with interesting silhouettes that allow one to circulate easily throughout the space was paramount,\u201d Vaughn Miller explains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe room features an ebonized secretary cabinet from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/introspective-magazine\/liza-laserow\/\">Laserow Antiques<\/a>, as well as many iconic vintage pieces from 1stDibs, including the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/josef-hoffmann\/furniture\/\">Josef Hoffmann<\/a> chair, whose matching brothers and sisters live upstairs,\u201d she adds. In the foreground, a custom sofa upholstered in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/schumacher\/furniture\/\">Schumacher<\/a>\u2019s Tigre Blanc fabric faces a vintage <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/kaare-klint\/furniture\/\">Kaare Klint<\/a> piece in its original leather.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cCohesion is the utmost goal in my designs,\u201d Vaughn Miller says. \u201cTownhouses allow curations to be perceived often in one breath. The 2,500-square-foot home has three bedrooms, three and a half baths, a wide kitchen and a generous parlor-level living room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis room served two purposes: Because it was off the study, it was used during the day as an additional work space, as well as for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/blogs\/the-study\/versatile-living-rooms\/\">entertaining<\/a> at night,\u201d Beryl Kemper says. \u201cWe played up the study aspect with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/buy\/library-ladders\/\">library ladder<\/a> and added comfortable, flexible seating for different types of parties and events.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The space reads as both library and salon, lined with floor-to-ceiling bookshelves but offering perches for lively conversation in the form of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/buy\/montauk-sofa\/\">Montauk sofa<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/room-and-board\/furniture\/\">Room &amp; Board <\/a>daybed and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/buy\/z-gallerie-used-furniture\/\">Z Gallerie<\/a> chair, all arranged atop the clients\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/furniture\/rugs-carpets\/\">vintage rug<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sunlight floods the room, a rarity in \u200ba\u200b rowhouse of this vintage. \u201cTownhouses are typically dark because they only have windows in the front and the back,\u201d Beryl Kemper says. \u201cBut this home, and this room in particular, actually had wonderful light, which we wanted to play up in the design.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/design-firms\/liz-caan-interiors\/\">Liz Caan<\/a> and architect Timothy Burke reworked a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/project\/union-wharf-boston-ma\/362202\/\">brick post-and-beam townhouse<\/a> to suit a young family of boaters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The structure was taken down to the studs, then rebuilt to function as efficiently as a sailboat while keeping the warmth of a classic New England residence. \u201cThe townhome has an abundance of cabinetry that, at first glance, appears to be paneling,\u201d Caan says. \u201cWe made every square inch count.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this quiet corner of the living room, subtle finesse resides in the details: brass <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/visual-comfort\/furniture\/\">Visual Comfort<\/a> sconces and picture light, a tripod table by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/oandg-studio\/\">O&amp;G Studio<\/a> and a custom pouf in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/buy\/zak-fox\/\">Zak + Fox fabric<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe kept a neutral palette to not compete with the views and focused on high-quality textural fabrics,\u201d Caan says. \u201cThe client wanted a sophisticated color palette and classic touches without sacrificing her very young family\u2019s casual, water-loving lifestyle.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n<div In her family\u2019s eat-in kitchen she hung a mural she conceived with wallpaper-maker <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/buy\/de-gournay\/\">de Gournay<\/a>, featuring Japanese-style cranes before a golden backdrop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The radiant work presides over a green-marble table, vintage chairs upholstered in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/la-maison-pierre-frey\/furniture\/\">Pierre Frey<\/a>\u2019s Le Manach fabric and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/search\/?q=iroko\">reclaimed-iroko-wood<\/a> cupboards and shelving, all grounded by the original patinated-brick floor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a great space, but the materials are quite dark and heavy, and there\u2019s not much natural light,\u201d the designer notes. \u201cI\u2019ve always loved <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/buy\/antique-japanese-screens\/\">Japanese screens<\/a>, so I spoke to de Gournay, and we came up with this together. By the time Roberts came to it, little original detail remained, a previous gutting having removed the stoop and left the interior unrecognizable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEssentially, we were starting with a blank canvas,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/introspective-magazine\/elizabeth-roberts-architects\/\">says the architect<\/a>, whom the <em>New York Times<\/em> once called&nbsp; \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/05\/01\/style\/brooklyn-townhouse-architect.html\">the titan of the townhouse<\/a>.\u201d The revived building now flows openly between dining and living areas, with new details inspired by the past but not beholden to it.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the primary bedroom, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/gianfranco-frattini\/furniture\/\">Gianfranco Frattini<\/a> tension-mounted bookshelf mingles with a three-tiered <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/ingo-maurer\/furniture\/\">Ingo Maurer<\/a> ceiling light.
