In a Marina del Rey family home<\/a>, Zeb & Crunk<\/a> opened up the kitchen to create a space that feels both lively and lived-in. A wall came down to make room for dining. \u201cOur inspiration was the eat-in kitchen from the movie Moonstruck<\/em><\/a>,\u201d says design principal Jazmyne Crunk. \u201cA dining table in the middle of a kitchen is just so dreamy.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 1960s Danish modern dining chairs<\/a> and the 1960s French-oak dining table<\/a> were both 1stDibs finds. \u201cThe aesthetic draws on mid-century modern influences while incorporating global accents, vibrant textiles and organic materials,\u201d Crunk says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shades of green appear throughout, including in the cookware, seat fabric, paper pendant<\/a> and smaller light fixtures by the windows. The Tabarka Studio wall tiles, hand-painted with a floral pattern, pair well with the heated terracotta<\/a> flooring and Crema Marfil marble<\/a> countertops. A skylight is painted blue on the inner surfaces to create a 3D effect when looking up on cloudless days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe look for opportunities to incorporate elements that make a kitchen feel warm and inviting,\u201d Crunk explains. \u201cSimple additions like lamps<\/a> placed on countertops, rugs<\/a> or thoughtfully selected fabrics can make a big difference.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Brooklyn-based studio Chango<\/a> transformed a classic A-frame cabin on a Yosemite Valley lake<\/a> into a modern retreat where the kitchen is the heart of the home. Opening to both the dining and living rooms, the space layers warm-tone woods with sheetrock painted in Benjamin Moore\u2019s Simply White. Large windows frame views of the forest outside, and iridescent Zia tiles bring some shimmer indoors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis specific home was asking for warmth,\u201d says Chango creative director Susana Simonpietri. \u201cThe kitchen is full of natural light, wood millwork to complement original ceiling beams and paneling and colorful folk-patterned textiles that feel very California.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Custom hardwood floors from Riva Spain, counters of Caesarstone Fresh Concrete and a Lacanche range combine \u200bfunction with bucolic character. Details like Waterstone plumbing, Rocky Mountain Hardware sash pulls, Vuuv Works<\/a> stools and ceiling lights by Martin Brudnizki<\/a>\u2019s And Objects emphasize high-quality craftsmanship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s a refreshingly modern Sierra Nevada kitchen that honors its cabin roots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a Malibu house<\/a> steps from the \u200bPacific Ocean, Amber Lewis<\/a> designed the kitchen to serve as a perfect gathering place for a family that \u200blives as much outdoors as in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The palette leans beach bright without going full\u200b maritime. \u200bA vaulted ceiling with skylights floods the space with sun, and Roman-clay walls and antique-stone flooring ground it in warmth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

White-oak groove-paneled cabinetry balances honed Calacatta-marble and Petit Granit counters, while a brick oven provides old-world utility. Waterworks<\/a> unlacquered-brass fixtures, Ann-Morris<\/a> copper pendants, Belgian leather stools<\/a> from Lucca Antiques and a vintage Mahal rug<\/a> add patina.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI wanted this kitchen to have a rustic, cozy vibe, even though the room is quite grand,\u201d Lewis says. \u201cThe floors, paired with the oakwood tones, helped bring this to life and connect seamlessly with the rest of the home.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Still, when designing a kitchen, she encourages clients to resist overmatching. \u201cIt can be different from the rest of the house while complementing it,\u201d she explains. \u201cDon\u2019t think you have to carry through the flooring, cabinetry colors or specific elements from other spaces \u2014 mix it up and go with what you love.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chloe Warner, founder of Redmond Aldrich Design<\/a>, joined forces with architecture firm Marmol Radziner<\/a> to create a contemporary coastal compound<\/a> for fashion entrepreneur Melissa Akkaway<\/a> and her young family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 7,600-square-foot Malibu home is composed of a series of streamlined volumes with plenty of openings to the landscape. Warner sought to humanize that framework with color, pattern, natural textures and furnishings that feel collected over time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Telescoping doors slide back to merge the centrally located kitchen with an olive grove and an outdoor dining pavilion. \u201cWhen the glass wall to the olive grove is open, the space becomes a natural gathering place,\u201d Warner says. \u201cSo, we wanted materials and colors that honor that daily magic.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The adjoining great room is simple in form and layered in tone. The result is a harmonious equilibrium between the architecture\u2019s modernist formality and the family\u2019s energy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Clements Design<\/a> gave a West Hollywood pied-\u00e0-terre<\/a> in a mid-century high-rise a major reset, starting with the kitchen. \u201cThe client wanted to completely modernize the kitchen and was committed to taking a minimalist approach,\u201d says Kathleen Clements<\/a>, who runs the firm with her son, Tommy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

New blond-wood flooring, pull-less cabinets and modern appliances were brought in, she explains, \u201cwith the client\u2019s aesthetic in mind, but also her desire for a true functioning kitchen.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The pared-back style of the renovation spotlights the collectible pieces in the middle: a circa 1929 Le Corbusier<\/a> table partnered with an Alexandre Noll<\/a> mahogany side chair from the 1940s. The overall effect is sleek and contemporary, but the mix hints at a soulful life beyond the brand new.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tineke Triggs<\/a> transformed an Edwardian San Francisco townhouse <\/a>into a contemporary home \u200bthat is generally overflowing with high-brow playfulness and color. The kitchen, however, embodies a quieter sort of glamour, with \u201csubtle layers when you really take it in,\u201d Triggs says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Modern lines and soft whites define the space, while materials with sheen catch the light. \u201cThe Calacatta Retro marble sets the tone right away,\u201d she adds. \u201cSoft veining, just enough movement and a really elegant backdrop for the whole space.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Above the island, customized Apparatus<\/a> Synapse pendants in blackened brass and tarnished silver offer a dash of drama. The bespoke cabinetry and island, coated in C2\u200b Paint\u2019s Whistler White, are met by WorkOf stools with black-walnut frames\u200b, sienna-leather\u200b cushions\u200b and satin-aluminum footrests\u200b.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThey\u2019re so good here,\u201d Triggs says of the stools. \u200bShe finished the room with Manor pulls in walnut and nickel\u200b for another dab of polish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDesigning a kitchen is all about balance for me,\u201d \u200bthe designer \u200bexplains. \u201cIt has to function beautifully, of course, but it should also lift your mood the minute you walk in. Good materials, great lighting and a few special details\u200b \u2014\u200b that\u2019s the sweet spot.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vance Burke<\/a> transformed a former den in his own mid-century Palm Springs house<\/a> into a sunny and sophisticated kitchen. \u201cWe kept the materials light and used natural desert tones,\u201d he says. \u201cWhite terrazzo keeps the light bouncing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A counter-height glass-and-Lucite table<\/a>, taking the place of a traditional island, is lit from above by skylights and a suspended fixture. Additional illumination from below creates a dramatic effect at night. A Heidi Van Wieren painting over the fireplace and a 1970s Murano globe lamp<\/a> from J.F. Chen<\/a> make the space read more like a sitting room than a kitchen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhenever possible, we love adding upholstery, lamps and art to kitchens,\u201d Burke says, \u201cto complete a continuation of a residence and to avoid being too antiseptic.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Brentwood, Jake Arnold<\/a> was asked to rework a Spanish Revival house<\/a> designed in the 1930s by architect-to-the-stars Paul R. Williams<\/a>. Arnold, whose own celebrity clientele includes John Legend, Whitney Cummings and Aaron Paul, approached the project with reverence for Williams\u2019s vision while reshaping the interior for the 21st century.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the kitchen, the British-born designer found inspiration in the English country<\/a> aesthetic, filtered through the lens of a West Coast sensibility. The room’s neutral scheme encompasses shades of mocha and tan, and much of the wood cabinetry has distinct tiger-striped graining, which is contrasted with hand-painted sections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Antique bronze hardware<\/a> injects a subtle sense of history, and a La Cornue range introduces a timeless silhouette. For the marble surfaces, Arnold selected an ogee edge that draws attention to the natural veining of the stone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vintage lighting<\/a>, plaster walls and bold textiles add variety. \u201cVintage pieces are always nonnegotiable for me,\u201d Arnold states in his 1stDibs50 spotlight<\/a>. \u201cThey add soul to a space.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Commune Design<\/a> renovated a 1922 Spanish-Moorish Revival house<\/a> in L.A. by\u200b legendary local architect Stiles O. Clements, updating it without erasing its story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because the kitchen had already been expanded by a previous owner, the work in this space involved surface changes rather than \u200ba major reconstruction. Commune repainted the existing cabinetry, introduced a copper backsplash and swapped in Van Cronenburg hardware.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A floral wallcovering by Marthe Armitage<\/a> introduces pattern without overwhelming the space, thanks to its low-contrast color scheme. A sculptural Lindsey Adelman<\/a> chandelier hangs overhead, while an abstract<\/a> painting by Stephen Greene<\/a> provides an expressive moment. Soane<\/a> barstools, vintage sconces<\/a> found at Obsolete<\/a> and a runner<\/a> from Amadi Carpets<\/a> complete the picture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFor us, it was important to be respectful of the history and original details of the house but without being too literal or stuffy with the decor,\u201d says firm coprincipal Steven Johanknecht<\/a>. \u201cThere is a mix of periods and styles of furnishings.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Martha Mulholland<\/a> was tasked with softening a 15,000-square-foot white rectilinear house<\/a> in Bel Air. The client, a real estate developer,\u200b wanted the intimidating spaces to be \u201cwarmed up and given context,\u201d Mulholland\u200b says<\/a>, \u201cso I made it rustic, modern, earthy, warm and sophisticated\u200b.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The kitchen is part of a large multiuse space that functions as the family\u2019s informal hub, with plate-glass walls that slide open to a pool terrace carved into the hillside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To make the volume feel more intimate, Mulholland broke it up into distinct zones.\u200b Travertine countertops define the kitchen itself, which flows into a casual dining area \u200bwith a custom table and iconic Mario Bellini<\/a> Cab chairs<\/a> from \u200bCONVERSO<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
