It&#8217;s a great piece by great designers. Standing by the wall is an early-17th-century <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/buy\/flemish-cabinet\/\">Flemish cabinet<\/a> made of ebonized oak inlaid with bone and tortoiseshell, which is crowned with a duo of 18th-century <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/buy\/blue-and-white-chinese-vase\/\">Chinese blue-and-white porcelain vases<\/a>, all from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/dealers\/newel\">Newel<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/baccarat\/furniture\/\">Baccarat<\/a> crystal ball on a 2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/furniture\/tables\/side-tables\/franck-evennou-mbenga-bronze-slate-side-table-france-2014\/id-f_39204282\/\">M\u2019Benga side table<\/a> by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/franck-evennou\/furniture\/\">Franck Evennou<\/a>, from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/dealers\/maison-gerard\/\">Maison Gerard<\/a>, adds a moment of mystique.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The mix, Lawrence explains, was intended \u201cto create an elevated room that felt vibrant and fresh, not old and stuffy.\u201d He points to the enduring appeal of modernist classics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/marco-zanuso\/\">Zanuso<\/a>, like many of the other mid-century modern design masters, created pieces with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/designs\/\">iconic shapes<\/a> that have stood the test of time,\u201d he says. \u201cThis chair is easily 50-plus years old and still feels like new. Paneled appliances and retractable doors that conceal a coffee station and microwave keep everything clean-lined and open. Custom oak and powder-coated-steel shelving and a curved window seat were designed specifically for the nook.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis was a fairly small and awkward \u2018flex space\u2019 on a large stair landing that features a huge panorama window with an amazing view of Downtown Austin. It was just calling for a window seat,\u201d says Petra McKenzie, cofounder of MK Workshop. \u201cWe reimagined this area as a cool space to retreat and read a book or to sit and chat while enjoying the view before going to bed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The designers introduced a mix of vintage and contemporary furnishings to complete the scene. Providing curvy counterpoints to the boxy shelves are a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/hans-wegner\/furniture\/\">Hans J. The owner was living there with her husband and children, but \u201cthere was no furniture,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/introspective-magazine\/billy-cotton\/\">the designer recalls<\/a>. \u201cShe said, \u2018I love the house empty, and I\u2019m petrified to put anything in it.\u2019 Which I can understand.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rather than rush to fill the interiors, Cotton introduced a few<a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/billy-cotton\/\"> custom pieces<\/a>, beginning with a<a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/furniture\/lighting\/chandeliers-pendant-lights\/billy-cotton-pick-up-stick-chandelier-nickel-bronze-usa-2014\/id-f_25413642\/\"> Pick-Up Stick chandelier<\/a> in the kitchen, followed by a rectilinear dining table from his Joinery Collection, the brass connectors that fasten the top to the legs introducing a subtle flair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Next came a few select vintage pieces. The site, he says, \u201cmakes it very easy to be an international designer. I can shop the galleries in Paris, Italy and Berlin. These sit comfortably among other mid-century standouts, including a set of four <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/axel-larsson\/furniture\/\">Axel Larsson<\/a> armchairs around an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/aldo-tura\/furniture\/\">Aldo Tura<\/a> games table, not to mention a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/buy\/de-sede-ds-600-sofa\/\">de Sede DS-600 sofa<\/a> and a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/finn-juhl\/furniture\/\">Finn Juhl<\/a> for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/baker-furniture-company\/furniture\/\">Baker Furniture<\/a> cocktail table. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Adjacent to the fireplace is a more recent creation, Shinique Smith&#8217;s expressive canvas <em>And The World Don\u2019t Stop<\/em>, 2009. The ensemble is grounded by a custom hand-tufted rug embossed with a Tibetan-inspired pattern, conceived, as Bec puts it, as \u201ca large, stylized cloud, which helps to bring calm and snugness to the space.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Deploying well-known furniture designs keeps the medley in check, Miranda explains: \u201cIt\u2019s good to have items that are more familiar.
