For a longtime client who\u2019d recently moved to Sleepy Hollow, New York, Joyce Sitterly<\/a> converted a characterless new-build house into an exuberant retreat<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the primary bedroom, a pear-tree mural by Kit Kemp<\/a> and a palm-frond-patterned rug found on 1stDibs establish a semitropical vibe. Spode<\/a> plates atop the heirloom nightstands add a personal note.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although the homeowner\u2019s schnoodle, Fritz, has a pagoda-roofed dog sofa<\/a> beside a George Smith<\/a> armchair in a corner of the room, he often stretches out on the curvy cane bed<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMy client is somewhat larger than life, and that comes across in her spaces,\u201d Sitterly says. \u201cThe combinations in the house are so unexpected, and there\u2019s always something new to see.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the bright kitchen of a beach house in Mashpee<\/a>, Massachusetts, designer Liz Caan<\/a> covered the cupboards and refrigerator in a pale gray blue that mirrors the Atlantic waters beyond the windows. Brass pulls<\/a> visually connect the storage to the La Cornue range and the sink fixtures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis kitchen was designed to support a family of five plus guests in a summer home,\u201d Caan says. \u201cWe wanted to maximize the dedicated square footage and also the views of the ocean outside.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the center of the room is a substantial island fashioned from a repurposed wooden cabinet<\/a>. \u201cThe island was the icing on the cake,\u201d Caan says. \u201cA vintage piece that gives the room patina and purpose and sparks conversation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the living room, rough boards \u2014 left raw, washed, painted and stained \u2014 line the walls, floors, ceilings and even an oversize sliding door that opens to the landscape. Understated hues define the striped sofa<\/a>, reclaimed-wood coffee table<\/a>, wicker armchairs<\/a> and lamps made from weathered baluster<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOur vision was a relaxed English country living room<\/a> that felt sun washed and quietly romantic,\u201d says Jesse Carrier, who runs the firm with his wife, Mara Miller. \u201cSoft pastels create a gentle backdrop, while rustic woods, woven textures and patinated finishes keep the space grounded and prevent the palette from feeling overly sweet.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On an estate dubbed The Strand<\/a> in Dana Point, California, Ohara Davies-Gaetano<\/a> merged three oceanfront structures into a single expansive residence. \u201cRooted in a coastal setting, this project draws its interior palette from the ever-shifting tones of sky and sea,\u201d Davies-Gaetano says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the foyer, heritage objects play against sea-salt plaster walls to form depth of character. An 18th-century Gustavian bench<\/a> sits beneath an antique French painting<\/a> reminiscent of Monet’s hazy landscapes, while floors made from reclaimed 18th-century oak<\/a> display a darker patina underfoot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIn the early morning light, a soft lilac \u2014 infused with the palest hint of gray \u2014 emerges as a defining influence. The color evokes a quiet, mesmerizing serenity that feels as atmospheric as it is emotional,\u201d Davies-Gaetano says. \u201cThe result is a layered, immersive mood \u2014 one that mirrors the painting\u2019s own quiet intensity.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To give a builder\u2019s spec house in East Hampton<\/a>, New York, a dose of character, designer Heidi Caillier transformed the primary bedroom<\/a>, starting with a coat of Benjamin Moore\u2019s soothing Quietly Violet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She then layered the space with whimsical pieces, including a Stephen White Luminessence light sculpture and a Bradley Sabin<\/a> installation of ceramic flowers. More down-to-earth are the custom live-edge headboard<\/a>, BDDW<\/a> nightstands and vintage Bor\u00e9ns Bor\u00e5s<\/a> sconces sourced from 1stDibs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An Ib Madsen and Acton Schubell<\/a> Pragh armchair, also found on 1stDibs, holds its own near the windows. \u201cWe covered it in this pretty Pierre Frey<\/a> pink,\u201d Caillier says. \u201cIt\u2019s the perfect piece for this bedroom and such an ideal place to read and relax.\u201d A Josef Frank<\/a> tripod floor lamp and a 19th-century English work stool fill out the reading corner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI never present ideas to the client that I don\u2019t love,\u201d Caillier says<\/a>. \u201cI will often show two options: the one I really, really want to do and the one they actually might prefer. Even if I want to push something to a certain point, I\u2019m aware that it may be going too far for the client and am prepared to rein it in. Clients have to actually live in their houses, and they have to love them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Celerie Kemble<\/a> hints at her Palm Beach roots in her design for this Manhattan kitchen, where pastels enliven the dining nook. A floor hand-painted in robin\u2019s-egg blue and cream echoes the abstract canvas on the wall above Eero Saarinen<\/a>\u2019s Pedestal table<\/a> and Tulip chairs<\/a>, which are upholstered, like the banquette, in an unexpected lavender leatherette.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt is in the quirks that things become distinctive, that interiors become animated by life and nourished by their inhabitants,\u201d Kemble says<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cEvery house I do is totally different,\u201d she adds. \u201cI want to create rooms that are comfortable and classic, but also with a sense of what feels fresh, timely and personal.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a young couple\u2019s Brooklyn high-rise apartment<\/a>, three arched windows in the living room provided the starting point for designer Darren Jett<\/a>. Every corner of the home feels lilting and dreamy. Nowhere is this atmosphere more apparent than in the reading room, devised as a personal haven for the wife.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jett coated the walls and ceiling in a peachy buff paint, deploying  sheer curtains and Studio Variously\u2019s Arc Coral silk pillows<\/a> to match. These are offset by a bamboo-stalk daybed<\/a> veiled in a diaphanous cotton canopy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The unmistakable silhouette of bamboo also appears in the Maison Bagu\u00e8s floor lamp<\/a>, next to an \u00fcber-comfy shearling chair<\/a> and ottoman. \u201cThe idea was to give it warmth,\u201d Jett says of his vision for the project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A well-designed room, he adds, \u201cshould transport people, which only happens if you and the client have a vision and commit to it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the sunroom of a house on Lake Michigan<\/a>, Chicago-based Sasha Adler<\/a> assembled a m\u00e9lange of antiques and bespoke furnishings in a variety of tempered jewel tones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A custom blush sofa is flanked by a pair of 19th-century painted Swedish chests<\/a> from Debenham<\/a>, each topped with a different Mario Lopez Torres<\/a> bird lamp. Nearby, a French three-arm floor lamp<\/a> and four coral-colored ottomans from Disegno Karina Gentinetta<\/a> add a contemporary moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Enveloping the scene is a leafy wallpaper that mimics the foliage outside the windows. \u201cI like a home that doesn\u2019t feel one-note,\u201d Adler says. \u201cI want the eye to stop and pause at various items and have it be an interesting mix.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pale greens bring an aura of lushness to this bedroom in a Chicago home<\/a> with interiors by Alessandra Branca<\/a>. The delicate shade introduces a fresh seasonality while maintaining the composure of traditionality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI envisioned a bedroom that felt like early spring all year round!\u201d Branca says. \u201cI have always felt the lighter versions of green to be more restful and calming.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pattern-wise, she juxtaposed a fanciful floral fabric used for the wallcovering and curtains with a plaid textile in the same hues on the headboard, bed skirt and tablecloth. The verdant color is complemented by lustrous finishes to give the room visual richness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cKeeping the balance is what it is always about,\u201d Branca says. \u201cI use a soft color and then punctuate the space with something lacquered<\/a> or japanned<\/a>, as I feel it gives the interior more depth.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t
