An architect, furniture and industrial designer and editor, Gi\u00f2 Ponti was arguably the most influential figure in 20th-century Italian Modernism<\/a>. Ponti designed thousands of furnishings and products, and his buildings were erected in 14 countries. Through Domus<\/i>, the magazine he founded in 1928, Ponti brought attention to virtually every significant movement and creator in the spheres of modern art and design.<\/p>\n

A prolific designer, Ponti\u2019s style can\u2019t be pegged to a specific genre. In the 1920s, he created ceramic forms that were modern, but decorated with motifs from Roman antiquity. After WWII, however, Ponti found a receptive audience for novel, idiosyncratic work and Ponti\u2019s typical furniture forms from the period, such as the wedge-shaped \u201cDistex\u201d chair, are simple, gently angular, and colorful. In the 1960s and \u201970s, Ponti\u2019s style evolved again as he explored biomorphic and experimental shapes.<\/p>\n

His signature furniture piece is the sleek \u201cSuperleggera\u201d chair, produced by Cassina<\/a> starting in 1957. (The name translates as \u201csuperlightweight\u201d \u2014 advertisements<\/a> featured a model lifting it with one finger.) Ponti had a playful side, best shown in a collaboration he began in the late 1940s with the graphic artist Piero Fornasetti<\/a>.<\/p>\n
