There are, however, a few facts of which we are certain. She sailed to New York shortly after the end of the WWI from her native Australia. Her sister Dorothy, a silent screen star, who went on to have a career in Hollywood, likely traveled with her.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_69763\" style=\"width: 615px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-69763\" class=\"size-full wp-image-69763\" src=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/blogs\/the-study\/wp-content\/uploads\/leermeester_rose_cumming_hoofdfoto_thumb_800x600_K.jpg\" alt=\"A portrait of Rose Cumming.\" width=\"605\" height=\"300\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-69763\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A portrait of a young Rose Cumming.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>It\u2019s probably through this sister that she became acquainted with Frank Crowninshield, the influential editor of <em>Vanity Fair<\/em>. Cumming, who must have been in her mid- to late-20s when she arrived in the city, was apparently at a loss as to what she should do with her life and sought out Crowninshield\u2019s advice. Perhaps thinking of the then-burgeoning design career of the former actress <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/blogs\/the-study\/elsie-de-wolfe\/\">Elsie de Wolfe<\/a>, he ventured that this witty, attractive and quite stylish young woman might become a decorator. Supposedly she replied \u201cPerhaps, I would, but first tell me what it is.\u201d<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>And so another legendary decorating career was launched. \u201cMiss Rose,\u201d as she came to be known, might not have been an actress, but she was a bohemian with a flair for drama. She died her hair lavender, wore dresses with serious cleavage, along with ornately embroidered Mandarin robes and enormous hats, though not at the same time. One might argue that all the great women decorators of the early 20th century possessed some quirky traits, but with Cumming the quirky verged on kooky. Her knack for retail was soon obvious, as she was the first New York shopkeeper to keep the lights on in her store at night. Among the clients she attracted were some of the era\u2019s biggest movie stars: Mary Pickford, Marlene Dietrich and Gloria Swanson. All these larger-than-life \u201cNormas\u201d required living spaces as big and theatrical as they were. She possessed many <em>b\u00eate noirs<\/em>, among them coffee tables, faux ceiling beams, wall-to-wall carpeting, except on a staircase or in a bedroom, and just about every lamp she ever saw. Apparently she disliked them because of her \u201cdistrust\u201d of electricity, which she tried to do without.
