For instance, the restored 1940s rattan furniture can be easily relocated to accommodate dining for 30 guests. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/george-nelson\/furniture\/lighting\/chandeliers-pendant-lights\/\">George Nelson Bubble pendants<\/a> continue the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/furniture\/style\/mid-century-modern\/\">mid-century<\/a> motif and work equally well as soft illumination for a dinner party or for lounging under the stars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe black <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/furniture\/building-garden\/fountains\/material\/stone\/\">stone fountain<\/a> lends soothing sounds of water,\u201d Tharps notes. \u201cGreenery includes favorite specimens collected during clients\u2019 travels. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/buy\/sea-shells\/\">seashells<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/buy\/floral-rugs\/\">floral rug<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/buy\/turned-wood-stool\/\">hexagonal wood stool<\/a> ground the space, while the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/buy\/sunburst-ceiling-lighting\/\">sunburst weather,\u201d Jayne says. \u201cThis room is a bit more elaborate than a typical New England bathroom, but it has a directness that is well related to its place.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr Caan<\/a> subtly tweaked the Massachusetts tradition of decorating beach homes in hydrangea blue and bright white.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe project is somewhat classic and has some blue, but we try to use it in fresher ways,\u201d Caan says. \u201cIn this bedroom, we paired a more teal blue with lilacs and pinks and grays\u201d to go with the changing colors of the sea and sky outside the window.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hence, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/buy\/phillip-jeffries\/\">Phillip Jeffries<\/a> grasscloth wallcovering and cushy Soane Britain rattan chairs flanking a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/furniture\/more-furniture-collectibles\/home-accents\/trunks-luggage\/\">vintage trunk<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/furniture\/seating\/stools\/\">stool<\/a>. \u201cWe wanted the home to feel elevated yet approachable, collected yet meaningful,\u201d Caan says, \u201cand just a creative director of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/design-firms\/koo-de-kir\/\">Koo de Kir Architectural Interiors<\/a>, had several directives for revamping this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/project\/art-filled-townhouse-boston-ma\/168022\/\">1890s Boston brownstone<\/a>: Make it feel fresh, create flexibility for entertaining, and showcase the client\u2019s extensive art collection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One room posed a particular challenge. \u201cParlors tend to be complicated to decorate for modern families, due to the long, narrow layout,\u201d she says. \u201cWhen we designed this space, we not only furnished it for daily use but also supplied multiple layout options for parties ranging from a sit-down dinner for 16 to a passed-hors-d\u2019oeuvre party for 20-plus people.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Within this sumptuous scheme, Irving papered the walls in a blush Phillip Jeffries silk, accompanying it with a pale <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/the-rug-company\/\">Rug Company<\/a> carpet on the floor. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/buy\/bubble-chandelier\/\">bubble chandelier<\/a> is by Apparatus, the floor lamp is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/dealers\/flos\/shop\/\">FLOS<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/furniture\/mirrors\/\">antique mirror<\/a> came from 1stDibs, and the cocktail table and side table are both <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/dealers\/lawson-fenning\/shop\/\">Lawson-Fenning<\/a>. The living room, with floor-to-ceiling windows that reveal the surrounding woodland, features an eclectic array of furniture, including several mid-century icons, like the classic <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/designs\/eames-lounge-chair-ottoman\/\">Charles and Ray Eames lounge chair and ottoman<\/a> and stainless-steel <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/buy\/arc-floor-lamp\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">arc lamp<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other pieces that Barnes incorporated belonged to the previous owners. &#8220;The little rustic stool is so charming, so I kept it,&#8221; she says.
