With Scott Maddux\u2019s background in architecture and Jo leGleud\u2019s eye for fashion, the duo has a serious talent for creating spaces that suit their well-heeled clients\u2019 tastes and lifestyles.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The firm\u2019s signature look isn\u2019t easy to condense, but one constant is its devotion to a bold, colorful amalgam of old and new woven together with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/introspective-magazine\/maddux-creative\/\">unexpected touches of glamour<\/a>. (Think: gilded chimneys, leather sofas, spinning mirror balls.) Photo by Ricardo Labougle<\/p><\/div>\n<p><b><i>Should the mood of an artwork <\/i><\/b><b><i>echo<\/i><\/b><b><i> the look and feel of the room in which it will live? <\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unless you\u2019re a serious collector and your house is more a museum than a home, then yes. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re outfitting an important room, the work needs to be something with a bit of gravitas. If it\u2019s a decorative piece for a guest bedroom, it can be less important. For example, you could choose it based on color alone. Key pieces should always be chosen for something other than just decorative effect. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Important rooms don\u2019t automatically have to be filled with gallery-grade works, either. In many contemporary environments, the walls are white and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/art\/\">art<\/a> is on the walls \u2014 and that\u2019s it. There\u2019s no real interaction between the wall and the art! I prefer rooms with more of a layered approach. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re designing around a piece, as we did in this Anglo-Australian couple\u2019s living room, select a wall color <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/blogs\/the-study\/famous-colorful-paintings\/\">that sets off colors found within the work<\/a>. We\u2019re often painting walls with darker, more intense colors. This teal color was chosen to balance the warm red tones within the homeowners\u2019 beloved oil painting by Australian Aboriginal artist Turkey Tolson Tjupurrula. Not only do they have the ability to totally transform a piece of art, but they instantly give works more significance. Sometimes, highly decorative frames can be just as important as the pieces within.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/blogs\/the-study\/how-to-arrange-wall-art\/\">way you hang pieces<\/a> also matters. Thoughtful framing of not-so-important pieces looks great if the works are all hung together, in a gallery-style configuration. Don\u2019t look to fill a wall with one giant piece. A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/blogs\/the-study\/gallery-walls\/\">gallery-style hanging<\/a> is more interesting and effective.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this Central London living room, we grouped 15 photos from <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rachel L\u00e9vy\u2019s<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> hydrangea series, in simple, professional frames, and hung them in a grid. The result? A graphic, powerful display that really showcases the variations of colors in the photographs \u2014 precisely because their frames were downplayed. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i>What about buying off-the-shelf frames? <\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s okay to do. Photo by Andreas Von Einsiedel<\/p><\/div>\n<p><b><i>So how does one go about collecting, even if one doesn\u2019t have an art budget, per se? <\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These days, it\u2019s very important to have an art collection of some importance when you have a grand home<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">many of our clients already do. But whether you\u2019re growing your current collection or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/blogs\/the-study\/reasons-to-collect-art\/\">just starting on that journey<\/a>, we always aim to acquire works that will remain with homeowners for years, to buy artwork that they\u2019ve chosen for a reason and to select pieces that will inevitably grow into a larger body of work.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keep in mind that what classifies even disparate works as a collection is the fact that they\u2019re personal acquisitions. On one level, purely because you\u2019ve chosen certain pieces, they relate to you somehow. You may not know what story the work is telling, but that\u2019s all part of it. Start out buying smaller pieces as an easy way to find your footing as a first-time collector. Photo by Ricardo Labougle<\/p><\/div>\n<p><b><i>How does the scale of a space, as it relates to the piece, factor in?<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This Southeast London home, in a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">former factory<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, is a great example of how we deal with scale. To the right of the photo is a very gestural oil painting by <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ross Chisholm<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Photo by Brotherton-Lock<\/p><\/div>\n<p><em><b>Aside from galleries, where do you find great artwork? <\/b><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some of my prized personal pieces are those I\u2019ve found in junk shops \u2014 from amazing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/art\/paintings\/material\/oil-paint\/\">oil paintings<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/art\/sculptures\/\">sculptures<\/a>. I particularly love anything well-made that reflects someone\u2019s hand. You can find art objects in all sorts of environments. Photo by Ricardo Labougle<\/p><\/div>\n<p><b><i>What should one consider when buying art online?<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you have the chance to see the work in person, great. And if you can meet the artist in-person, it\u2019s a welcome treat that can add yet another layer of narrative to the piece. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But you can actually get a good feel for what artwork looks and feels like, even online. These days, we\u2019re so used to looking at images online. You can actually put together a pretty complete picture in your mind, and at a certain point you can take the plunge and be satisfied. We found a bunch of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/buy\/antique-wagon-wheel\/\">vintage wagon wheels<\/a> and cogs in extraordinary colors at a market just outside Lille, in France, and placed them in the dining area of this West London home. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here, we created an interesting wall-hanging composed of found objects. And to create motion in that little window, we arranged the wheels on plinths of varying heights.
