Interior designer Jessica Schuster<\/a> merged modern glamour and old-world character in her reimagining of an apartment in a 1906 Italian Renaissance Revival<\/a> building on Manhattan\u2019s Upper East Side.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFor the foyer, we opened up two smaller rooms to create a spacious, light-filled entry that serves as a central hub for the home,\u201d she says. \u201cCustom moldings and limestone flooring nod to the building\u2019s classic character while adding a contemporary touch.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other such touches include an Achille Salvagni<\/a> Darts chandelier and a biomorphic painting<\/a> by Landon Metz. Schuster worked throughout the home with sumptuous fabrics, like the custom Claremont textile with Houl\u00e8s fringe covering the foyer\u2019s center table<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A remarkable family retreat in Wisconsin<\/a> had a previous life as a Boy Scouts camp. In reconceiving the compound, Bruce Fox<\/a> sought to create a home that \u201cfeels as though it\u2019s been passed down through generations,\u201d he says. \u201cTo achieve this, I selected furniture and objects from various periods to give the spaces a curated, collected-over-time feel.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the wood-paneled foyer, a French wine-tasting table<\/a> mingles with an Art Deco ottoman<\/a> and an Old Hickory<\/a> stool, above which hangs a perfectly rusted chandelier<\/a> found in a drafty warehouse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Antique kilim rugs<\/a> and a railroad-station bench<\/a> topped with pillows in vintage textiles<\/a> \u201cfurther contribute to the room\u2019s layered, storied atmosphere,\u201d says Fox. And the red-hot hue of a hand-carved door by Michael Graham, of Liederbach and Graham Architects<\/a>, is offset by the cooling green-blue of boldly striped drapes<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cA thoughtfully designed entryway offers an immediate sense of warmth and intrigue,\u201d Fox says, \u201cinviting visitors to explore the rest of the space.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI love designing foyers that set the mood for the house. It has to be uplifting,\u201d says Peter Mikic<\/a>. In his design scheme for an art collector\u2019s townhouse in the Kensington<\/a> section of London, this uplift is also cheeky, thanks to the Ben Turnbull artwork Us vs Them<\/em>, 2007, with its dueling pistols encased behind the words \u201cIn Emergency Break Glass.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nearby are a Ring Tall sconce<\/a> by CTO<\/a> and a vintage chair reupholstered in a vibrant geometric textile next to a brutalist console<\/a>. The ornate French-style bronze balustrade and brass handrail climb all four stories of the home, along the way encountering a Damien Hirst<\/a> Spot print and a daisy chain of Jamb<\/a> pendants extending down through the staircase\u2019s central void. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe clients wanted a very light, traditional foyer with pops of color and artwork,\u201d Mikic says. Mission accomplished.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the foyer of her own Tudor house, in Scarsdale<\/a>, New York, those enduring objects come in the form of an R & Y Augousti<\/a> bench pulled up to a circa 1970 Angelo Mangiarotti<\/a> console under an Herv\u00e9 Van der Straeten<\/a> mirror.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019m always looking at art<\/a> and functionality and how I can combine the two,\u201d Laxer says. \u201cI wanted the foyer to feel timeless \u2014 a space that introduces the design of the home.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Martha Mulholland<\/a> embraced the grandeur of a contemporary Bel Air mansion<\/a> when decorating its interiors. \u201cOften, the directive with such a home is to make it cozier and \u2018human scaled,\u2019 \u201d she says. \u201cRather than trying to make it something it\u2019s not, we leaned into the muscular nature of the architecture and chose decor that felt similarly sculptural, chic and textural.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Works of statement art<\/a>, curated with advisers from CAP, and fine design appear throughout the home. \u201cAnd,\u201d says Mulholland, \u201cmy favorite pieces from the collection are featured prominently in the entry.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Greeting visitors are a trio of wooden columns carved by Teodor Graur in 2017, a found-steel seat in the manner of Gerrit Rietveld\u2019s Zig-Zag chair<\/a> and a custom mobile chandelier by Rewire<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThese pieces,\u201d Mulholland explains, \u201cshare a mixture of sleek and rustic materials that complement the hand-chiseled limestone walls, reclaimed-teak door and polished-travertine floors.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 84-story condominium tower at 111 West 57th Street<\/a> in Manhattan, designed by SHoP Architects<\/a> with interiors by Studio Sofield<\/a>, sits atop the 16-floor Steinway Building, which was constructed in 1925 by the piano makers of the same name<\/a> and includes a performance space impressive enough to compete with nearby Carnegie Hall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThere is no building more New York than the Steinway,\u201d says the interior design firm\u2019s principal, William Sofield. \u201cIts heritage, noble presence on 57th Street and romantic connection to Carnegie Hall cement it in our collective memories.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The lobby, the designer says, \u201crequired a suitable dignity, monumentality and artistic expression\u201d to accord with both the historicity of the original building and the 21st-century luxury of the new skyscraper, which is the world\u2019s slenderest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sofield decorated the space in \u201clily-of-the-valley blossoms of rock crystal on a Grecian wave of stems and leaves made of hammered steel and bronze, within a cove of gilded limestone,\u201d as he poetically puts it. These architectural elements pair with an oversize urn<\/a> filled with sculpted palm fronds. The end-grain wood flooring was repurposed from the old Steinway and Sons loading docks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Further historical allusions are provided by a 19th-century French tapestries<\/a> and a sofa<\/a>, covered in custom silk velvet with an Egyptian Revival<\/a> pattern, that was inspired by one in the Duke and Duchess of Windsor<\/a>\u2019s home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe are all drawn to New York for the interminable energy and excitement, yet it comes with a price,\u201d Sofield says. \u201cI wanted to create a moment of restorative respite \u2014 calm amid the chaos.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a Malibu family home<\/a>, Amber Lewis, of Amber Interiors<\/a>, deployed an array of natural colors and textures, aiming, she says, to \u201cstrike the perfect mix of materials, while maintaining a livable and laid-back house.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To make the tall foyer feel extra inviting, she brought in a vintage rug<\/a>, mirror<\/a> and console<\/a>. Perfectly contrasting with the room\u2019s organic finishes is a monumental mobile-like brass chandelier by Lindsay Adelman<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI want any entry I design to feel elevated and welcoming,\u201d Lewis says, \u201cand also cohesive with the rest of the home.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alexandra Champalimaud<\/a> seamlessly mingled antiques<\/a> and contemporary pieces in an apartment on New York\u2019s Park Avenue. The modern-day furnishings in the foyer, in fact, are likely to be coveted antiques in the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Among these are an Herv\u00e9 Van der Straeten<\/a> console and sconce and a custom Kiko Lopez<\/a> mirror, purchased through Maison Gerard<\/a>. If the decor seems a bit spare, that\u2019s the way Champalimaud likes it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cChic to me is less,\u201d she told Introspective<\/em><\/a>. \u201cThe power is in the soul of a place, not its adornment. It\u2019s like a person. You can perceive their presence.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
