Photo by Felix Odell<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Bentwood furniture dates as far back as the Middle Ages, but it is the 19th-century German-Austrian cabinetmaker <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/michael-thonet\/furniture\/\">Michael Thonet<\/a> who is most often associated with this now-classic technique. Thonet in 1856 patented a method for bending solid wood through the use of steam, and from there the bentwood look skyrocketed to furniture fame. Bentwood was embraced by design greats ranging from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/josef-hoffmann\/furniture\/\">Josef Hoffmann<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/gio-ponti\/furniture\/\">Gi\u00f2 Ponti<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/adolf-loos\/furniture\/\">Adolf Loos<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/alvar-aalto\/furniture\/\">Alvar Aalto<\/a> for its versatility, timelessness and simple elegance.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, Bentwood furniture is receiving striking modern interpretations from makers like Thonet, which is being carried on by the next generation. Among them is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/furniture\/seating\/rocking-chairs\/luigi-crassevig-cane-bentwood-rocking-chair-signed-branded\/id-f_5569743\/\">this gorgeous 1970s chair from Italian designer Luigi Crassevig<\/a>. Luigi worked under the wing of his father, Alfieri, who put the Crassevig label on the map through his mastery of bending wood by steam.
