Pantone\u2019s 2017 Color of the Year is a verdant tone called Greenery, which evokes Granny Smith apples or butter lettuce. But we\u2019ve got our eyes on a different shade noted in <\/span>Pantone\u2019s Spring 2017 Fashion Color Report<\/span><\/a>: Primrose Yellow.<\/span><\/p>\n

Primrose Yellow sparkles with \u201cheat and vitality,\u201d says Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute, conjuring thoughts of a warm, sunny day. In fashion, the pigment is seen in everything from workwear to athleisure, so \u201cwe can expect it to be used as a cheerful pop of color in this season\u2019s palette,\u201d Eiseman notes. And Primrose Yellow furnishings can have a similar effect on a room, when used in moderation.<\/span><\/p>\n

Below, renowned interior designers share their tips for decorating with this happy hue and name some on-trend items that would work well with it.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

Alexandra Loew<\/strong><\/h2>\n

\u201cPrimrose Yellow feels like a palette cleanser,\u201d says Alexandra Loew<\/a>, an arty interior designer with offices in New York and Los Angeles. \u201cIt\u2019s a color that can go hard-edge eighties,\u201d which makes it an ideal backdrop for avant-garde furniture pieces such as Shiro Kuramata\u2019s <\/a><\/span>How High the Moon chair<\/span><\/a> from 1986<\/a> or Comme des Gar\u00e7ons founder Rei Kawakubo\u2019s <\/a><\/span>No.24 chair<\/span><\/a> from the late 1980s<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

How She<\/strong>\u2019s <\/b>Used It<\/strong><\/h2>\n

In her own work, Loew has deftly deployed Primrose Yellow to add a pop of color to a <\/span>children\u2019s room on the Upper East Side<\/a> (above)<\/span> and to a contemporary <\/span>living room in Gramercy Park<\/a> (top of the page)<\/span>, both in the form of egg-shaped Tato stools.<\/span><\/p>\n

Loew\u2019s Primrose Yellow Picks<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Loew is a fan of this antique Khotan carpet from East Turkestan<\/a>. She finds the piece, which dates from the early 20th century, \u201cbright and acidic but dimensional enough to have some gravitas as well.\u201d With its punchy yellow hue and traditional motifs, it would work in a variety of settings.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think Art Deco and eighties design make wonderfully strange bedfellows,\u201d Loew says of <\/span>this Schneider Glass centerpiece from the 1930s<\/span><\/a>, which would add a cheerful jolt to any staid dining table. <\/span><\/p>\n

\n

Maddux Creative<\/strong><\/h2>\n

\u201cYellow is such a wonderful color to use, especially in London, because it\u2019s so contrasting with the skies,\u201d says Scott Maddux, one half of the Southeast London\u2013based interiors firm Maddux Creative<\/a>. \u201cWe had a pink moment last year, and falling off of that moment, yellow seems to make sense. It\u2019s a nice counterbalance to [Rose Quartz], and it maintains the freshness without being too contrasting.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Though he finds Primrose Yellow to be somewhat old fashioned, he\u2019s intrigued by how it can become modernized. \u201cUsing it with black really gives it more of a graphic outline,\u201d he says, and it\u2019s ideal for mixing with aqua and pink to shock an otherwise dusty palette. In terms of fabric prints, Maddux says Primrose Yellow \u201cworks incredibly well in silk if you find the right tone.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

How They\u2019ve Used It<\/h2>\n

For an eclectic family home in London\u2019s Notting Hill neighborhood, the duo added a dash of Primrose Yellow with a <\/span>stunning settee<\/span><\/a> upholstered in silk. \u201cIt just made the room,\u201d Maddux says, \u201cand in the same house, we brought the same colors over on <\/span>some cushions<\/span><\/a> to tie the room together under a series of paintings by a Norwegian artist.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Maddux Creative\u2019s Primrose Yellow Picks<\/h2>\n

\u201cA lot of Meissen Porcelain from Germany uses Primrose Yellow well in its painting,\u201d says Maddux, who chose a <\/span>snake-handled vase table lamp from the 19th century<\/span><\/a>. \u201cIt\u2019s nice how it pops everything out.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Like Loew, Maddux appreciates the bold contrast of pairing Primrose Yellow with high-sheen chrome, as seen above in these <\/span>Milo Baughman lounge chairs<\/span><\/a> from the 1970s.<\/span><\/p>\n

Woodson & Rummerfield\u2019s House of Design <\/strong><\/h2>\n

\u201cThat type of yellow is a classic yellow for us, being here in Hollywood,\u201d says Jaime Rummerfield, co-owner of glamorous interiors firm Woodson & Rummerfield’s House of Design<\/a>, which is known for its work in Southern California. \u201cIt\u2019s not a juvenile color. It\u2019s actually a very sophisticated hue.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

In private residences, Rummerfield likes to use Primrose Yellow in textiles, upholstery, art and wall coverings \u2014 \u201cmore as an accent than the primary driver for the space,\u201d she says. \u201cIt\u2019s a pretty strong color, so I think it\u2019s better in doses.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWhere there are pops of yellow, it adds so much interest,\u201d says Rummerfield, who added a Primrose Yellow stool and artwork to a <\/span>contemporary living room in Hancock Park<\/span><\/a>. She recommends pairing the shade with rich blues, emeralds, and jewel tones for an \u201cimpactful and bold\u201d look.<\/span><\/p>\n
