Seldom does one come across a life so charmed. What he accomplished during his 41-year career of wild, wondrous creation \u2014 the extraordinarily opulent yet restrained decoration of palaces, villas, pieds-\u00e0-terre, townhouses, corporate headquarters, yachts, jets and hotels \u2014 is more than most of us might ever dream. Photo by Jacques P\u00e9pion<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Born in Casablanca to globetrotting Argentine parents of Sephardic Jewish descent, he spent much of his childhood traveling to glamorous and exotic places with them and his<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> younger brother, Charles,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and baby sister, Linda, with whom he was extremely close \u2014 and who now runs his studio.  His love of art, beauty and decorative splendor, especially the rich, complex sort everywhere on view in Morocco, ultimately led him to study art history and world cultures as a young man at the \u00c9cole du Louvre in Paris.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not surprising for such a budding aesthete, Pinto loved to take pictures. He was also ambitious, and he moved to New York in the 1960s to work as a photographer for Cond\u00e9 Nast. Soon, he was traveling the world shooting fabulous interiors. Photo by Jacques P\u00e9pion<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He was encouraged in this pursuit by his close friend, the celebrated fashion designer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/hubert-de-givenchy\/\">Hubert de Givenchy<\/a>, himself a once precocious talent and a renowned decorative-arts connoisseur. In <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rizzoliusa.com\/book.php?isbn=9782080202833\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alberto Pinto: Signature Interiors<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, recently published by Flammarion<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Givenchy writes in the foreword about Pinto\u2019s bold first effort: a grand, supremely elegant apartment he designed for himself with \u201csuperb furniture (including two <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/furniture\/storage-case-pieces\/style\/ming\/\">Ming cabinets<\/a>) giant palm trees . . . and an immense hall lined with <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">azulejos<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spanish painted tiles. The apartment was also a <\/span>calling card for Pinto, whose \u201csuccess was immediate,\u201d as Givenchy notes.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 1971, he founded Cabinet Alberto Pinto, housed in a suitably stunning 17<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th-<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">century h\u00f4tel du particulier on Place des Victoires (visiting the headquarters on an initial consultation was all but required by Monsieur Pinto, as his staff still call him). The clients who called on him came to include European aristocrats, Saudi and Qatari princes and numerous financiers and business tycoons from across the globe. All are luxurious, but some verge on swank minimalism, while others are over the top in their \u201cOriental\u201d opulence. Photo by Giorgio Baroni<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to his interior decoration firm, he launched a homewares collection, offering limited-edition furniture, tableware, linens and accessories, as well as collaborating on such pieces with luxury manufacturers like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/introspective\/eye_on_design\/pierre_frey\/\">Pierre Frey<\/a>, Raynaud and D. Porthault. What\u2019s fascinating about this impressive output is that Pinto had no talent as a draftsman. Yet \u201che always knew exactly what he wanted,\u201d according to his sister, Linda Pinto. \u201cHe didn\u2019t just have an incredible eye,\u201d she says, \u201che had incredible feeling. He knew exactly how to explain to his collaborators and artisans what he was after. That is why his houses are so full of incredible detail.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While he clearly enjoyed designing in all decorative styles, what Pinto prided himself on most was his ability to bring together \u201cimmensity and comfort,\u201d as he told <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Architectural Digest <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in an October 1992 article. While the book documents interiors of singular extravagance, which might strike an impolitic chord in these times when the world\u2019s \u201cone percent\u201d are under such scrutiny, the exceptional refinement of the detailing, the extraordinary rhythm of architectural forms, furnishings and art cannot but evoke wonder and respect. The interiors of Alberto Pinto are glorious works of art.
