Times of political uncertainty spur the most significant cultural upheavals, whether it\u2019s the rise of Romanticism<\/a> during the French Revolution or the 1960s countercultural movement in response to the Vietnam War. <\/span>So it only follows that the latest cultural zeitgeist, <\/span>hygge<\/span><\/i>, is a little hazy on specifics and heavy on coziness.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because while there are certain definable moments that point to the collective anxiety we\u2019re feeling about the current political climate \u2014 Brexit, Donald Trump\u2019s impeachment \u2014 we haven\u2019t yet seen the full effects of these decisions. In this unknown, we crave safety, security and closeness. Enter hygge<\/i> (pronounced \u201choo-guh\u201d). The centuries-old Danish<\/a> concept of snuggly comfort and simplicity is currently experiencing a global renaissance, with the New Yorker<\/i><\/a>, New York Times<\/i><\/a> and Telegraph<\/i><\/a> all declaring hygge<\/i> the next, new, best way to live.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

While there is no literal translation of the Danish term into English, Louisa Thomsen Brits<\/a>, author of <\/span>The Book of Hygge<\/a><\/span><\/i>, defines it as \u201can experience of relatedness, of belonging to the moment and to each other. It\u2019s a feeling of being warm, safe, comforted and sheltered. It\u2019s that feeling of well-being and contentment.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tina Seidenfaden Busck<\/a>, founder of Copenhagen design studio and shop <\/span>the Apartment<\/span><\/a>, concurs: \u201c<\/span>Hygge<\/span><\/i> is intangible \u2014 a feeling, an atmosphere. You can feel it when it\u2019s there, but it\u2019s very difficult to stage.\u201d And yet, here we are, trying to pin that ephemeral feeling so that we too may <\/span>hygger<\/span><\/i> on a regular basis in our own homes during these uncertain times.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Brits puts the phenomenon this way: \u201cThe secret to <\/span>hygge<\/span><\/i> lies in asking ourselves where we feel most at home, who makes us feel at ease, what are the things we do that anchor us, what contributes to our sense of well-being, where do we turn for comfort?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

She points out that we all <\/span>hygge<\/span><\/i> without realizing it, whether it\u2019s \u201cbeside a fire on a dark night, around a table for a shared meal, alone in bed with a good book or with a coffee in our local caf\u00e9.\u201d With that said, she reminds that \u201clike anything of value, it takes some effort. You can\u2019t warm yourself beside a fire unless you\u2019ve chopped wood first.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

And in terms of outfitting your home with hyggelig<\/em> decor, Busck recommends turning to \u201call types of lamps,\u201d as \u201clighting is the easiest way of creating a hyggelig<\/em> atmosphere in a given space, especially if they have colored glass and a warm sheer.\u201d She also likes to add dimmers to all her lighting fixtures<\/a> so she can \u201cadjust the lighting to the situation.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Additionally, thick rugs<\/a> and upholstered pieces<\/a> can instantly create a warm and cozy feeling. Tapestries and wall hangings<\/a> instantly add texture and warmth<\/a>. Hygge<\/em> isn\u2019t about a specific interior design style more than it is the feeling you get once you walk into a room. Honestly, a hyggelig<\/em> home is in the eye \u2014 and heart \u2014 of the beholder, although cozy blankets<\/a>, fluffy pillows<\/a> and sumptuous rugs certainly don\u2019t hurt.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

For a dining room on New York’s Lower East Side<\/a>, Elizabeth Roberts<\/a> took on the seemingly impossible task of making minimalism warm and cozy<\/a>. In fact, Brits reminds that it\u2019s often \u201chow we console and make ourselves at home wherever we are, in the flux and flow of our busy, sometimes challenging, lives\u201d that\u2019s the most hygge<\/em> thing to do. She says \u201cthe times when I became more aware of the value of <\/span>hygge<\/span><\/i> was when I found myself in need of comfort \u2014 when I have been far from home, lonely or exhausted.\u201d And isn\u2019t that exactly how so many of us are feeling, collectively, in this moment? <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

  • Make a circle of warmth \u2014 light a candle, dim the lights, pull chairs together, adjust your surroundings to guide your energy and desires.<\/span><\/h3> <\/li>\n\n\n\n

  • Establish a point of focus, whether it\u2019s a cup of tea, a conversation, a shared meal, an opened book or a bottle of wine.<\/span><\/h3> <\/li>\n\n\n\n

  • Come to your senses and think about how we are touched by everything around us.<\/span><\/h3> <\/li>\n\n\n\n

  • Feel the contrast between this brief, restorative pause and everything that exists on its periphery.<\/span><\/h3> <\/li>\n\n\n\n
