This is a vintage hand-turned, hand-painted tribal wooden spice box from Afghanistan with a stylized floral and leaf design in red, gold, and yellow.

The drawers are marked cloves, pepper, ginger, cinnamon, all spice, mxt spices. The porcelain knobs on the drawers are all original.

Havdalah is preformed on a Saturday evening. the burning of spices symbolized the sweetness of Shabbat. The head opens and is locked with a hook in a small receptacle for the spices.

A spice box is used to hold sweet-smelling herbs/spices and can be fashioned in many forms.

It is designed to hold the aromatic Besamim spices, which are passed around the synagogue during a Havdalah ceremony.
