Ram Kumar is one of the greatest artists in Indian modern art. He was part of the progressive group of artists and was preoccupied with painting Beneras for a large part of his main and later years in art.

The first decades of the 20th century were a period of artistic upheaval, with modern art movements including Cubism, Surrealism, Futurism and Dadaism questioning centuries of traditional views of what art should be.
