A Close Look at art-deco Jewelry

Fascination with the Jazz Age is endless, and even today jewelry designers continue to be inspired by authentic Art Deco jewelry and watches.

The Art Deco period, encompassing the 1920s and ’30s, ushered in a very distinct look in the design of jewelry. There were many influences on the jewelry of the era that actually began to take shape prior to the 1920s. In 1909, Serge Diaghilev brought the Ballet Russes to Paris, and women went wild for the company’s exotic and vibrant costumes It’s no wonder, then, that jade, lapis lazuli, coral, turquoise and other bright gemstones became all the rage. There already existed a fascination with the East, particularly China and Japan, and motifs consisting of fans and masks started to show up in Art Deco jewelry.

However, the event that had the greatest influence on Deco was the excavation of the tomb of King Tut in 1922. When the world saw what was hidden in Tut’s burial chamber, it sent just about everyone into a frenzy. Pierre Cartier wrote in 1923 that “the discovery of the tomb will bring some sweeping changes in fashion jewelry.” And he couldn’t have been more right. “Egyptomania” left an indelible mark on all of the major jewelry houses, from Cartier to Van Cleef & Arpels, Boucheron and Georges Fouquet. (Cartier created some of the most iconic jewelry designs that defined this era.)

While a lot of Art Deco jewelry was black and white — the black coming from the use of onyx or black enamel and the white from rock crystal and diamonds — there is plenty of color in jewelry of the era. A perfect accent to diamonds in platinum settings were blue sapphires, emeralds and rubies, and these stones were also used in combination with each other.

Many designers employed coral, jade and lapis lazuli, too. In fact, some of the most important avant-garde jewelers of the period, like Jean Després and Jean Fouquet (son of Georges), would combine white gold with ebony and malachite for a jolt of color.

A lot of the jewelry produced during this time nodded to current fashion trends, and women often accessorized their accessories. The cloche hat was often accented with geometric diamond brooches or double-clip brooches. Backless evening dresses looked fabulous with sautoir necklaces, and long pearl necklaces that ended with tassels, popular during the Edwardian period, were favored by women everywhere, including Coco Chanel.

Find unique Art Deco necklaces, earrings, bracelets and other jewelry on 1stDibs.

Finding the Right wrist-watches for You

Antique, new and vintage wristwatches have captured the hearts and minds of all manner of watch collectors as well as the watchmakers themselves — it's time you found your own.

Certain vintage watches for men and iconic watch designs for women are sought after not only because of their graceful proportions or innovative materials but also because of the illustrious histories of the houses that created them, histories that they stylishly embody.

Bulgari’s legendary Serpenti watch was on everyone’s list after the collection’s bold bracelet, which technically debuted after the timepiece, graced the wrist of actress Elizabeth Taylor. If anything, elaborately crafted timepieces — the unmistakably boxy silhouette of Cartier Tank watches, the elegant and minimal Calatrava designed by legendary Swiss house Patek Philippe — are even more effective than the shape we associate with traditional wristwatches.

Form watches — the all-encompassing moniker bestowed upon non-round watches — are making headlines and completing contemporary fashionable ensembles the world over. At the same time, both casual fans and careful collectors are drawn to the unbeatable charm of vintage styles, such as the icons designed by Omega that even James Bond can’t resist.

In the early days of watchmaking, watches were fragile enough that they necessitated protection from the elements. Now, wristwatches made of gold and steel can withstand the harshest climates — even 100 meters underwater, in the case of Rolex’s Submariner. Designer Gérald Genta, whose range of clients included Rolex, created for Audemars Piguet the first luxury sports timepiece to be made from stainless steel. First introduced in 1972, the Royal Oak was a perfect choice for blending the form and function that are now synonymous with sports watches.

Are you shopping for a wristwatch? It’s good to keep your needs as well as your specific personal style in mind: A smaller, subtle timepiece is a good fit for small wrists. When will you be wearing your new accessory? There’s a versatile model out there for everyday wear, while a rugged, feature-heavy watch is a safe bet if you’re prone to embarking on all-weather activities in the great outdoors.

Find antique, new and vintage wristwatches on 1stDibs.

Questions About Deco Tank Watch
  • 1stDibs ExpertMay 5, 2023
The best way to know what Cartier Tank watch you have is to check the serial number on the back of the case. Cartier customer service can look up the number for you and provide you with detailed information about your timepiece. Check the official Cartier website for the latest contact information. On 1stDibs, find a selection of Cartier Tank watches.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
No, Rolex did not carry a line of tank watches. It was Cartier who introduced the Tank Watch in 1917, inspired by the Renault tanks used on the Western Front. The flat boxy look by Cartier certainly inspired some Rolex designs, but it did not copy the line name used by Cartier. Find vintage and contemporary Rolex and Cartier watches from some of the world’s top boutiques on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertMarch 3, 2023
Many celebrities and notable figures wear Cartier Tank watches. Some famous people who photographers have captured wearing the timepieces include Jeff Goldblum, Rami Malek, Tom Holland, Dan Levy, Robert Pattinson and Jason Momoa. But anyone can wear a Cartier Tank watch. Crafted in 1917, one year before the Great War came to a close, Cartier’s Tank watch reportedly borrowed its clean, sharp lines and boxy silhouette from France’s legendary Renault FT-17 light tank, itself a compact and extraordinary design that inspired numerous copies. Find a variety of Cartier Tank watches on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertMarch 31, 2023
What is special about the Cartier Tank watch is its unique design. The watch's rectangular shape is meant to conjure images of train tracks. In addition, the watch was the first Cartier timepiece to feature a water-resistant case when it launched in 1989. On 1stDibs, shop a selection of Cartier Tank watches.
  • 1stDibs ExpertMay 5, 2023
No, the Cartier Tank Solo is not a men’s watch. The French luxury watchmaker designed the Tank Solo as a timepiece for both men and women and created it in three sizes to suit a variety of wrists. On 1stDibs, find an assortment of Cartier Tank watches.
  • 1stDibs ExpertMarch 31, 2023
Whether Cartier Tank watches appreciate in value depends on a variety of factors, including how well they're cared for and what demand and supply are like in the future. Because it can be difficult to predict how the value of items will change over time, choose timepieces that appeal to you. At 1stDibs, we believe in buying what you love. Our shopping experience enables discovery and learning, whether you are a seasoned connoisseur or just beginning your collection. Buyers should keep in mind that the value of any investment is subject to fluctuation, and any investment decisions should be made according to the guidance of a financial advisor. On 1stDibs, find an assortment of Cartier watches.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
An art deco watch is defined by its geometric case, which is either circular or rectangular. The watch style was highly popular between 1920 and 1950, and is still sought after today. You’ll find a collection of art deco watches from some of the world’s top sellers on 1stDibs
