How Much is a Long Sectional Sofa?
Finding the Right Seating for You
With entire areas of our homes reserved for “sitting rooms,” the value of quality antique and vintage seating cannot be overstated.
Fortunately, the design of side chairs, armchairs and other lounge furniture — since what were, quite literally, the early perches of our ancestors — has evolved considerably.
Among the earliest standard seating furniture were stools. Egyptian stools, for example, designed for one person with no seat back, were x-shaped and typically folded to be tucked away. These rudimentary chairs informed the design of Greek and Roman stools, all of which were a long way from Sori Yanagi's Butterfly stool or Alvar Aalto's Stool 60. In the 18th century and earlier, seats with backs and armrests were largely reserved for high nobility.
The seating of today is more inclusive but the style and placement of chairs can still make a statement. Antique desk chairs and armchairs designed in the style of Louis XV, which eventually included painted furniture and were often made of rare woods, feature prominently curved legs as well as Chinese themes and varied ornaments. Much like the thrones of fairy tales and the regency, elegant lounges crafted in the Louis XV style convey wealth and prestige. In the kitchen, the dining chair placed at the head of the table is typically reserved for the head of the household or a revered guest.
Of course, with luxurious vintage or antique furnishings, every chair can seem like the best seat in the house. Whether your preference is stretching out on a plush sofa, such as the Serpentine, designed by Vladimir Kagan, or cozying up in a vintage wingback chair, there is likely to be a comfy classic or contemporary gem for you on 1stDibs.
With respect to the latest obsessions in design, cane seating has been cropping up everywhere, from sleek armchairs to lounge chairs, while bouclé fabric, a staple of modern furniture design, can be seen in mid-century modern, Scandinavian modern and Hollywood Regency furniture styles.
Admirers of the sophisticated craftsmanship and dark woods frequently associated with mid-century modern seating can find timeless furnishings in our expansive collection of lounge chairs, dining chairs and other items — whether they’re vintage editions or alluring official reproductions of iconic designs from the likes of Hans Wegner or from Charles and Ray Eames. Shop our inventory of Egg chairs, designed in 1958 by Arne Jacobsen, the Florence Knoll lounge chair and more.
No matter your style, the collection of unique chairs, sofas and other seating on 1stDibs is surely worthy of a standing ovation.

- 1stDibs ExpertOctober 7, 2024The difference between a sofa and a sectional comes down to design. A sofa is a one-piece cushioned and upholstered furnishing that seats two or more people at one time. A sectional offers seating for multiple users as well, but it consists of individual pieces, such as loveseats, chaises, chairs, recliners and corner components that can be arranged side by side to create unique configurations. Shop a large selection of sofas and sectionals on 1stDibs.
- How long should a sofa last?1 Answer1stDibs ExpertMay 3, 2024A sofa should last many years. The average lifespan of a sofa is 7 to 15 years. However, well-made pieces that are properly cared for may remain in good condition for much longer. To extend the life of your sofa, follow the maker's care advice regarding cleaning and stain removal. On 1stDibs, explore a large selection of sofas.
- What is a long sofa called?1 Answer1stDibs ExpertNovember 2, 2021A long sofa is usually called a chaise longue (in America, this is sometimes referred to as a chaise lounge). A chaise longue is a low reclining seat — it’s not quite a daybed, nor is it a sofa. It is an upholstered piece of furniture that gained popularity in France in the early 16th century. Shop a collection of antique, vintage, and contemporary chaise longues from some of the world’s top dealers on 1stDibs.
- 1stDibs ExpertFebruary 22, 2021Two highly reputable brands in the US for sectional sofas are Lee Industries and CR Laine. It is important to consider that the higher the quality the sectional sofa, the longer they will last. Find an expansive inventory of sectional sofas for sale on 1stDibs.
- 1stDibs ExpertNovember 2, 2021A three-section sofa is an upholstered couch that is designed with three sections for seating. A traditional sofa is typically a long upholstered seat that features a back and arms and is intended for two or more people, whereas a sectional sofa consists of multiple pieces that can be arranged in several different layouts. Shop a collection of antique, vintage and contemporary sectional sofas from some of the world’s top dealers on 1stDibs.
- How long is a three-seater sofa?1 Answer1stDibs ExpertFebruary 1, 2024How long a three-seater sofa is varies from piece to piece. However, most sofas designed to seat three adults are somewhere between 70 and 87 inches long. The average size is around 84 inches in length. On 1stDibs, explore a large collection of sofas.
- 1stDibs ExpertMay 30, 2024There are many types of sofas that are long-lasting. The durability of a sofa depends on both its materials and its construction. Some features that can help sofas stand the test of time include solid wood frames, hand-tied spring suspension systems and quality foam padding. In terms of upholstery, leather usually outlasts fabric, but there are exceptions to the rule based on quality and care. On 1stDibs, find a large selection of sofas.
- 1stDibs ExpertMarch 22, 2022A Roche Bobois sectional sofa normally does not require much assembly beyond fitting the frames of the individual pieces together. The procedure to follow varies. Consult the instructions provided with the sectional or contact the company for advice. You'll find a variety of Roche Bobois sectionals on 1stDibs.
