Annibale Colombo for sale on 1stDibs

In accordance with a centuries-old legacy of European cabinetmaking, each piece of Annibale Colombo furniture is made in Italy using only the highest quality wood and finest fabrics. The brand’s dining tables, armchairs and sideboards — designed by Giovanna Azzarello, Luciano Colombo, Giuseppe Manzoni and others — showcase unique forms and draw on the best of clean-lined mid-century modern furniture.

Annibale Colombo traces its history back more than 200 years to 1812, when furniture maker Filippo Colombo opened a workshop in Brianza at the base of the Italian Alps. Colombo created furniture for the Milanese middle class using traditional cabinetmaking techniques.

The company changed its name in 1990 — a new era for the brand. Annibale Colombo moved to a much larger headquarters in Novedrate, Italy, designed by Afra and Tobia Scarpa. Though production at the new facility involved industrial processes and innovative technology, little changed about how the company’s furniture is made. Annibale Colombo continues to use more than 60 types of wood (including rosewood, ash, walnut and maple), and its artisans employ traditional carving and inlay techniques. The resulting furnishings appeal to modern sensibilities while maintaining the timeless elegance and impeccable quality long associated with the company’s products.

Utilizing ethically sourced wood and natural dyes and treatments, Annibale Colombo has created custom furniture for many high-profile luxury projects worldwide. The company's pieces are in the Piccolo Teatro Grassi in Milan, the Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni in Bellagio, the Kulm Hotel in Saint Moritz and Hotel Ares Eiffel in Paris. Additionally, Annibale Colombo regularly takes part in the Salone del Mobile.Milano.

On 1stDibs, find Annibale Colombo tables, seating, case pieces and more.

A Close Look at modern Furniture

The late 19th and early 20th centuries saw sweeping social change and major scientific advances — both of which contributed to a new aesthetic: modernism. Rejecting the rigidity of Victorian artistic conventions, modernists sought a new means of expression. References to the natural world and ornate classical embellishments gave way to the sleek simplicity of the Machine Age. Architect Philip Johnson characterized the hallmarks of modernism as “machine-like simplicity, smoothness or surface [and] avoidance of ornament.”

Early practitioners of modernist design include the De Stijl (“The Style”) group, founded in the Netherlands in 1917, and the Bauhaus School, founded two years later in Germany.

Followers of both groups produced sleek, spare designs — many of which became icons of daily life in the 20th century. The modernists rejected both natural and historical references and relied primarily on industrial materials such as metal, glass, plywood, and, later, plastics. While Bauhaus principals Marcel Breuer and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe created furniture from mass-produced, chrome-plated steel, American visionaries like Charles and Ray Eames worked in materials as novel as molded plywood and fiberglass. Today, Breuer’s Wassily chair, Mies van der Rohe’s Barcelona chaircrafted with his romantic partner, designer Lilly Reich — and the Eames lounge chair are emblems of progressive design and vintage originals are prized cornerstones of collections.

It’s difficult to overstate the influence that modernism continues to wield over designers and architects — and equally difficult to overstate how revolutionary it was when it first appeared a century ago. But because modernist furniture designs are so simple, they can blend in seamlessly with just about any type of décor. Don’t overlook them.
