Japanese Contemporary Green Red Gold Porcelain Vase by Master Artist
Located in Takarazuka, JP
Mesmerizing contemporary large Japanese decorative porcelain vase, hand painted in extremely intricate patterns and extensive use of gold on vibrant green and red on a stunning bottle shaped porcelain body. 2016, the British Museum added a work by this artist to its collection of contemporary Japanese porcelain, a large lidded jar in the Imari-Arita polychrome enamel tradition. This is a signature masterpiece from an exclusive collection of highly collectible pieces by widely acclaimed master porcelain artist and recipient of numerous awards for his exceptional porcelain work and unique gold and platinum work on porcelain. It features the auspicious Mount Fuji and cherry blossom motif. Mount Fuji with its majestic presence is very revered in Japan and is a sacred site in the Shinto religion. It has been designated as a World Heritage site. Since the Edo period (1603-1868) many artists have depicted Mount Fuji in their art, from laquerware and paintings to ukio-e or woodblock print, which was the most popular art form for the middle class in the Edo period. Katsushika Hokusai’s woodblock print...

Japanese Woodblock Gakutei by Yashima Gakutei (1786-1868)
Located in Norton, MA
Japanese Woodblock Gakutei (1786-1868) by Harunobu Sugawara, original and unframed. ABOUT THE ARTIST Yashima Gakutei (1786-1868) Born in Edo as Harunobu Sugawara, Gakutei Yashima studied printmaking under Shuei and Hokkei. He moved to Osaka in the 1830s, where he designed landscape studies of his new home with a delicate and decorative style likely influenced by Hokusai. In addition to printmaking, he wrote kyoka (comic poems), often illustrating these verses in his prints. While a talented woodblock artist, Gakutei was also known throughout Japan as a writer. He translated and illustrated the 16th century Chinese novel Journey to the West. Gakutei Yashima’s oeuvre consists primarily of surimono. These deluxe, limited-edition prints blend the rich visual imagery of ukiyo-e with the ethereal art...

Shunichi Yabe Kofu #3, Wind of Light, Bizen Stoneware, 2013
Located in Milano, IT
What is immediately striking about the work of Yabe is his keen and natural sense of line. The artist, in fact, takes great care in first drawing an image of the work, and after hand-building the basic form a blend of Bizen mountain and rice-paddy clays, the work is carved with a knife into the form he had envisioned. After carving, the work is first bisque-fired and then its main-firing is executed in a small wood kiln for 3 days at a temperature reaching 1180 degrees. The resulting futuristic forms of Yabe’s stoneware present fresh new possibilities for Japanese Bizen clay in the 21st century. Shunichi Yabe...

Contemporary Japanese Bamboo Sculpture Honma Hideaki
By Honma Hideaki
Located in Atlanta, GA
A bamboo table top sculpture by Japanese bamboo artist Honma Hideaki (b. 1959) made in early 2000s. The basket form sculpture was a creative ikebana and could be used as such or simply as a okimono (decorative piece). The piece is of an unusual oval dish form with the wall irregularly outlined with bent bamboo, thousand-line construction form the upper part of the wall and the patterned twining was added in the lower part to give it a visual shift from airiness to solidity. A large piece of bamboo was selected as the base. Signed "Hide" underneath. An American Midwest collection. Honma Hideaki was born in Sado, Niigata prefecture. He studied under Honma Kazuaki...
