19th Century English Olivewood and Brass Inlaid Cabinet
By Town & Emanuel
Located in London, GB
A William IV cabinet attributed to Town and Emmanuel Constructed in a strongly grained olivewood and dressed with gold brass inlays and an etched and engraved brass panel; rising from a plinth base, the lockable single door having an inset panel in the manner of Jean Berain, enclosing a shelved interior, and flanked by narrow vertical conforming panels; the apron being dressed with three bronze rosettes, and the Jura Jaune marble is dressed with a three quarter arcaded brass gallery, circa 1830 The cabinet is illustrated and discussed in Christopher Payne’s “British Furniture 1820 to 1920” published in 2023. Payne singles out the rarity of the olivewood timber used as well as the necessity for hand cutting the large marquetry panel. Literature: Payne, Christopher. British Furniture 1820 to 1920 : The Luxury Market. ACC Art Books, 2023, pp. 38-39 (illus. fig. 1.33). Town and Emanuel Recorded in the 'Dictionary of English Furniture Makers 1660-1840', published by the Furniture History Society, as being situated at 103 New Bond Street between 1830 and 1840, and apart from being manufacturers of furniture, also dealt in 'curiosities and antiques'. The late renowned connoisseur Christopher Gilbert records in his 'Pictorial Dictionary of Marked London Furniture' London 1997, also published by the Furniture History Society, a writing table in the Transitional manner with similar plaques. Their label reads 'Town and Emanuel, manufacturers of Buhl Marquetrie, Resner (sic) & Carved Furniture, tripods, screens & c. of the finest and most superb designs of the Louis 14th. St. Charles Mid-Century Modern Steel Kitchen Upper Cabinet, Wall-Mount, Gray
Located in Brooklyn, NY
St. Charles Mid-Century Modern steel kitchen upper cabinet, wall-mount, gray, original finish. two-door, extended cabinet. Measures: 30" W x 16" D x 48" H. This listing is for “A” in the second image. St. Charles was one of the earliest brands of steel cabinetry in the United States, dating back to 1935, when St. Charles bought Janes & Kirtland, maker of the “White House Line” steel. Steel kitchens were first developed in the second half of the 1920s and exclusive to extremely high-end (often exhibition) homes in the pre-WWII era. These early (pre-war) cabinets were quite streamlined and "deco" in their appearance. Typically white, ice gray or gentle cream color, they were customized to each home and considered the 'modern' and very "American" choice for the discerning client. Frank Lloyd Wright was an early fan of steel kitchen cabinets and adopted them quite early on in the century. Wright chose St. Charles cabinets...

Jim Rose Two Door housetop quilt cupboard hot-rolled steel, found painted steel 42 H x 33 W x 17 D in 106.68 H x 83.82 W x 43.18 D cm JR0010 Jim Rose b. 1966 Bio: Born in Indiana, Jim Rose lived in Europe until he returned to the United States to attend college. After one year at Bard College, Jim transferred to the School of the Art Institute in Chicago (SAIC) where he graduated in 1988 with a BFA. His skillful interpretation of the Shaker design is a result of intense research and field study of Shaker furniture, architecture, culture and history. After over two decades of dedicated work, he has mastered the minimalism of the Shaker technique and created his own unique visual vernacular. The quilts of Gee's Bend have become a monumental influence taking this artist's work to new levels of unique interpretation and artistry. His selection of aged steel results in a patina directly related to that of aged wood while his colored strips beautifully mimic worn cloth. Each piece of furniture is masterfully made and intended for daily use. Jim Rose’s steel furniture is featured every year at SOFA Chicago for the past 25 years.
