Abercrombie & Fitch Furniture

American

Abercrombie & Fitch — a brand that spans over one hundred years — was initially famed for its wide variety of expensive sporting equipment and attire. It was said it carried everything from “exercise balls to elephant guns.” The company started as an outdoorsman and hunting store in the late 19th century before transforming into the clothing mecca for teens in the 1990s and early 2000s.

In New York in 1892, David T. Abercrombie — a former miner, trapper and railroad surveyor — opened the Abercrombie Company as a sporting goods and camping equipment store. Ezra Fitch — a wealthy lawyer, real estate developer and one of Ambercrombie’s best customers — became a partner in the company in 1900. In 1904, the company was incorporated and renamed "Abercrombie & Fitch Co." Fitch bought Abercrombie's share of the business and became the sole owner from 1907 to 1928.

Fitch anticipated a clientele far broader than merely those who had to camp to earn a living. Abercrombie & Fitch (A&F) became the go-to retailer when the wealthy planned safaris and other international excursions.

While it’s true that military style by now has truly invaded fashion, A&F is credited with bringing the safari suit, a hunting outfit based on British colonial military uniforms, to the urban consumer. For more than half a century, their goods were the image of correctness and opulence — inspiring a humorist to mock a perfectly-outfitted, affluent fisherman as an “Abercrombie and Fitcherman.” Fitch retired in 1928, selling his interest in the company to his brother-in-law, James S. Cobb.

By 1939 A&F was touted as the greatest sporting goods store in the world. During A&F’s peak, its customers included Ernest Hemingway and Teddy Roosevelt. The company outfitted the polar expeditions led by Roald Amundsen and Admiral Richard Byrd and provided equipment to the famed aviators Charles Lindbergh and Amelia Earhart.

Hard times fell on A&F in the 1970s, but the brand pivoted and emerged as a trendy clothing chain for teens and young adults in the '80s and '90s. Whenever it expanded during its heyday, the company confined its new stores to downtown areas of large cities and luxury-destination hotel stores. The company then attempted to widen its customer base by moving into the suburbs and adding less-expensive items to its usual stock.

For fashion lovers, the 1990s have become associated with styles adopted by today’s supermodels and influencers, and today’s enthusiasts of the era’s aesthetic don’t have to look much further than to vintage Abercrombie & Fitch to get their fix.

By Dimitri Omersa, Abercrombie & Fitch
Located in Los Angeles, CA
A wonderful collectors example of the 'Seal' leather animal by Dimitri Omersa for Abercrombie and Fitch, circa 1970s. This example is in beautiful lightly aged with light patina. Sturdy and structurally sound, this seal is ready to be used as a fun doorstop, a large paperweight, or use as a designer floor or tabletop sculpture / work of art or a friendly companion to an otherwise lonely house dog or cat. Omersa's designed leather animals for Omersa Leatherworks of England, Omersa & Company, Liberties of London and Abercrombie and Fitch. Excellent early production original of this design, ideal collectors example or for an interior design client. Omersa made his first leather animal, a pig, in 1927 and from there created a full suite of interesting and charismatic creatures. Each leather animal is of the highest quality, beautifully stained and waxed. This example is one of the earlier ones, which are rare and highly sought after by collectors therefore very few on the resale market. Leather Kangaroo Magazine Pouch Holder by Dimitri Omersa, 1970s
By Dimitri Omersa
Located in Los Angeles, CA
A beautiful large cognac colored leather Kangaroo magazine holder / sculpture by Dimitri Omersa, circa 1970s. Attractive light patina throughout, this charismatic leather animal can serve so many different uses, and makes a fantastic companion while also being a wonderful collectors piece to cherish. Some creative ways to use this Omersa is to hold magazines or small books / pamphlets. Or a bouquet of flowers, examples of these two uses can be found in the photos. Another idea which we did not photograph is for cables and cords - consider your laptop or cell phone cables, they can sit in the pouch when not in use, and can even wrap over or around the arms to manage the cords from getting tangled. Other uses could be simply as a collectible sculpture placed on a credenza, sideboard, bookshelf or mantle, on the floor as a floor sculpture or as a friendly companion for an otherwise lonely house dog or cat, or by the front door as a greeter to your guests and when you return home after a long day. We think it's great to name your Omersa, as many Omersa owners do, and we also believe every home needs at least one Omersa. Omersa's have so much personality and character - each one was hand-made (so every one is unique, just like us) of the highest quality leather, beautifully stained and waxed, this one approximately 45-55 years ago, and each of the years this one has lived - it has developed its own stories to tell through its gorgeous patina, it's no wonder most Omersa owners have developed personal relationship with theirs - not too much different than a house pet. We love our personal Omersa's that we keep at home, they always make us smile. A client of ours got one after his dog had passed, he said he wasn't ready yet for another - so an Omersa became the perfect friend at a time in need. From 1927 though 1950 leather pigs using scrap leather from hand made luggage were made by "Old Bill" for the department store Liberty of London. Around 1958 the business was transferred to Dimitri Omersa when Old Bill retired, and it was at this time that Dimitri came up with the ideas for other leather animals. Around 1963 Dimitri's leather animals caught the eye of Abercrombie and Fitch, at that time purveyor to the fantasies of the rich and famous. The animals were advertised in the A&F catalog from the mid 1960’s through to the late 1980’s. As you can see in our photos, we have a large collection of Omersa leather...

Information on Dimitri Omersa & co.: It seems that the first leather pig came into being almost by accident when ‘Old Bill’, who worked making hand luggage for Liberty’s of London, wondered what could be done with the leftover leather. He came up with the idea of a stuffed leather pig footstool! The first pig was sold through Liberty’s in 1927 and Liberty’s has stocked the animal ever since. In those days the pigs were made from pigskin and had very long noses! Dimitri Omersa and his wife Inge came to England in 1955 and settled at Lavender Croft, a sanctuary for refugees in Hitchin, Hertfordshire. Dimitri Omersa, a Yugoslav by birth, had been a naval officer and a political prisoner having been imprisoned by Tito for 10 years after the second world war. Dimitri Omersa found work in the leather trade and whilst representing a small leather company in Hitchin met ‘Old Bill’ at Liberty’s. ‘Old Bill’ was due to retire and a deal was struck for Dimitri Omersa to take over the business and continue the supply of pigs to Liberty’s. The business was located to Hitchin in 1958 and before long Dimitri Omersa had ideas for other animals! His first new piece was the leather elephant...
