Large Studio Ceramic Lamp by Post-War Artist Alan Wallwork, London 1964
By Alan Wallwork
Located in London, GB
A 1960s lamp, the base being a large piece of work by post-war London ceramicist, Alan Wallwork (1931-2019). Original shade.
A strong sculptural design, handbuilt and decorated with Wallwork's own runic symbols; finished in a mixture of glazes in natural tones from light oatmeal to deep grey.
The piece is in good original condition with the characteristics one might expect of a handmade piece, including minor imperfections, asymmetry and firing cracks; a short clay tear to the base, most likely from the drying process. A piece from Wallwork's London years, signed and dated to the underside "W 64".
Shade
The large statement shade fits through a duplex carrier (included). The shade is in good vintage condition overall with some wear to the string cover, which is fragile in places, light dust and fading.
Wiring
The wiring will need to be replaced in the country of install to meet local needs and regulations. The original switched bulb-holder takes a standard bayonet-fitting bulb. We advise a low-heat bulb (eg LED) with an opaque finish to protect the piece for the future and diffuse the light through the shade.
Approximate dimensions
H: 97cm including shade / 57.5cm ceramic only
Dia: 52cm at the shade
Wallwork set up his first studio in south London, in the late 1950s, sharing with other former Goldsmith students, then with fellow potter Bernard Rooke. Both Wallwork and Rooke were regarded as belonging to the group of handbuilders of the 1960s, which included Ruth Duckworth, Gillian Lowndes, Ian Auld and Gordon...
