Cigarette Case fired Enamel stripes in Art Deco style Sterling Silver Salimbeni
By Salimbeni, Giorgio Salimbeni
Located in Firenze, FI
Large rectangular table box with long rounded sides in 925/1000 sterling silver with fire-enamelled stripes in Art Deco style. With “lost” hinge, i.e. semi-invisible. Dimensions cm. 10.5 x 15 x 2.3. Weight gr. 548. Inspired by drawings by Louis Cartier from the early 1900s in Art Deco style and recreated for Cartier USA in the 1980s, manufactured in Florence in the Salimbeni company headquarters with completely manual execution by artisan artists with thick and thick slabs reinforcements suitable for supporting numerous high-fire enamelled firings at about 800° C. About cooperation Salimbeni and Cartier. Our first meetings with the Cartier USA Company took place through the Giorgini Company, the first "Buying Office" set up in Florence immediately after the Second World War, which had the purpose of bringing together Florentine, and also Italian, producers with American buyers, who especially appreciated the artistic objects still manufactured by artisans who still took inspiration from the Italian Renaissance, using techniques handed down from generation to generation. Mrs. Gina Pestelli, wife of a Florentine retail jeweller, was in charge of contacts with Cartier USA, above all an employee, while her daughter, also for Giorgini, took care of the fashion that in those years was affirmed in Florence with the events of "Pitti ". With their help, we began to supply frames and boxes in sterling silver gold plated with malachite and other semi-precious stones. At the same time, the official buyer of Cartier, Mr. William Smith, began to appreciate and commission the first objects with fired enamels, a process of which we have always been specialists. In 1975 we began exhibiting at the prestigious New York Jewellery Association Show, which we participated in both the February and July editions, for a good 26 years until 2001. In New York in those years the "Art deco style" was still very much appreciated, still mindful of the beautiful early 20th century architecture of the great buildings such as the "Crysler" or the "Empire State". We then began to produce frames, boxes, evening bags, "objets de vertu" and other objects in "art deco style" which were very popular with Mr. Smith who gave us some photocopies of Louis Francois Cartier drawings to reproduce them. Thus, numerous cigarette cases, powder compacts, evening bags, frames and table boxes were created exclusively for Cartier USA which, at the time, had the prestigious "Silver Department" on the first floor of the Cartier store on Fifth Avenue. An evening bag, with matching cigarette case and powder compact, were redone on the design created for a gift given to Mary Pickford at the time. In a 1986 Cartier catalogue...

Alphonse Debain - 10pc Antique French 950 Sterling Silver Serving Platter Set.
By Alphonse Debain
Located in Wilmington, DE
Direct from a private mansion in Paris, a spectacular 10pc. set (4 oval platters & 6 round platters) of 19th century, 950 sterling silver, Louis XVI serving platters by the one of Frances premier silversmiths "Alphonse Debain", includes 10 anti-tarnish wraps for easy storage, circa late 1880s. The realm of French silversmithing boasts a rich tapestry of artisans whose craftsmanship has left an indelible mark on the world of decorative arts. Among these luminaries, Alphonse Debain stands as a paragon of excellence, his legacy woven into the intricate patterns of sterling silver that define an era. Born in Paris in 1821, Alphonse Debain inherited a city steeped in artistic fervor. The 19th century witnessed a surge in artistic and cultural movements, including the Romantic and Art Nouveau periods, which influenced Debain's artistic sensibilities. Apprenticing under renowned silversmiths of the time, he honed his skills and developed a distinctive style characterized by intricate detailing and a harmonious blend of traditional and contemporary elements. In 1851, Alphonse Debain founded his own silversmithing firm, marking the inception of a journey that would redefine the standards of excellence in French decorative arts. The atelier quickly garnered attention for its commitment to quality craftsmanship and innovative design, attracting a discerning clientele that included aristocrats, royalty, and connoisseurs of fine silverware. The firm's accomplishments are evident in a myriad of forms, from ceremonial pieces to everyday tableware. Notably, Debain's silverware graced the tables of European royalty, earning him prestigious commissions and royal warrants. The exquisite craftsmanship of his pieces earned the firm accolades at international exhibitions, solidifying its reputation as a standard-bearer for French silversmithing. One of the hallmarks of Alphonse Debain's career was the creation of opulent tableware for royal households. His exceptional skills in crafting ornate silver dining sets and ceremonial pieces garnered the favor of monarchs and nobility across Europe. The firm's association with royalty not only elevated its status but also provided a platform for showcasing the finest examples of French silverware craftsmanship. The late 19th century saw a proliferation of international exhibitions showcasing the best of global craftsmanship and innovation. Alphonse Debain's firm consistently participated in these exhibitions, where its creations garnered widespread acclaim. Notable among these exhibitions was the 1878 Exposition Universelle in Paris, where Debain's silverware captivated the attention of an international audience and earned him a gold medal. Alphonse Debain passed away in 1907, leaving behind a legacy that reverberates through the annals of French decorative arts. The firm, however, continued under the guidance of his descendants, maintaining its commitment to excellence. The subsequent generations upheld the traditions established by Alphonse Debain while adapting to evolving design sensibilities. The 21st century has witnessed a renewed interest in craftsmanship and a nostalgia for the exquisite artistry of bygone eras. Alphonse Debain's creations have experienced a resurgence in popularity, with collectors and enthusiasts appreciating the timeless beauty of his silverware. The firm's antique pieces have become coveted items at auctions, attesting to the enduring appeal of Debain's craftsmanship. This is an amazing 10 piece serving platter set...
