Betty Woodman Prints and Multiples

American, 1930-2018
Betty Woodman was a leading American ceramist whose dazzling inventions with form and color moved beyond the traditional domain of craft. Her work is crucial to larger discussions about gender, craft, and modernism in 20th-century America. In 2008, Woodman was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award by the Brooklyn Museum. She has been honored as National Academician by National Academy Museum and School of Fine Arts in New York and is the recipient of the prestigious Dunwiddie Prize from that same institution. She holds Honorary Doctorates from Rhode Island School of Design; Nova Scotia College of Art and Design; and the University of Colorado, Boulder, where she served as Professor of Fine Arts for many years. Other honors and awards include the Premio Internazionale Vietri sul Mare, Fondazione Museo Artistico Industriale in Salerno, Italy; the Visionary Award of The American Craft Museum in New York; a Rockefeller Foundation Fellowship from he Bellagio Study Center in Bellagio, Italy; a Distinguished Research & Creative Lectureship, University of Colorado, Boulder; the Colorado Governor’s Award in the Arts; two NEA Fellowships, and a Fulbright-Hays Scholarship to Florence, Italy. Woodman’s work has been shown around the world in exhibitions throughout the US, and in France, Italy, Holland and Japan. Her work is in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art; Boston Museum of Fine Arts; Brooklyn Museum; Metropolitan Museum of Art; Smithsonian Institute; National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC; Philadelphia Museum of Art; Whitney Museum of American Art; the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam; Victoria and Albert Museum in London; the ICA London; and numerous others. In 2006, “The Art of Betty Woodman,” a retrospective of Woodman’s work, was shown at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.

Japanese Modernist Sculptor Woodblock (Woodcut) Monotype (Monoprint) Print
By Yasuhide Kobashi
Located in Surfside, FL
Yasuhide Kobashi (古橋 矢須秀 Kobashi Yasuhide, 1931–2003) was a Japanese woodblock print artist, painter, sculptor and stage designer. He was born in Kojima in Okayama Prefecture. His father was a ceramic clay artist and head of the Kyoto Industrial Craft Company. Kobashi learned printmaking from the sōsaku hanga (creative prints) master Unichi Hiratsuka (1895–1997). In 1955, Kobashi graduated from the Kyoto College of Crafts and Textiles, and in 1959, he moved to New York City. At first he was sponsored by Lincoln Kirstein of the New York City Ballet, who had visited his studio in Kyoto and commissioned a number of works from him. Elaine De Kooning, art critic and wife of influential Abstract Expressionist Willem De Kooning recommended Kobashi to the Allan Stone Gallery, He would continue to work with this gallery for more than 30 years. When Kobashi moved to New York in 1959, many American intellectuals and artists were eager to learn about Japan. Among the early influences to reach a wide cross section of American society was Suzuki Daisetsu's (1870-1966) Introduction to Zen Buddhism, published in English in 1949 with a preface by the noted psychologist Carl Jung. Nelson Rockefeller (governor of New York and later vice-president) was Kobashi's patron, and acquired one of the artist's sculptures for the New York State Executive Mansion in Albany. As a young man he was exposed to a wide range of arts, including sculpture, stage design, carpentry, stone cutting, ceramics, calligraphy, painting, and furniture design. Most notably, he studied woodblock printmaking under Hiratsuka Unichi (1895-1997), one of the leading innovators in the Creative Print (ssaku-hanga) movement that advocated total artistic control by a single artist over the entire printmaking process, in contrast to the traditional methods of ukiyo-e in which designer, carver, printer, and publisher all had a role in production. Kobashi is best known for his sosaku hanga woodblock prints and his sculptures intended to be rearranged, which he called "self-constructions". The Cleveland Museum of Art, the Honolulu Museum of Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA New York City), the Neuberger Museum of Art (Purchase, New York), the Albright Knox, the Weisman Art Museum (University of Minnesota, Minneapolis), and Southern Illinois University Edwardsville are among the public collections holding work by Kobashi. Yasuhide Kobashi created some of his first prints in New York at the Pratt Graphic Art Center. He became a member of the Society of Independent Artists and exhibited regularly with them. He is included in the book JAPANESE SCULPTORS: Isamu Noguchi, Yayoi Kusama, Akio Takamori, Yoshimoto Nara...

Little Owl Combined Wood/Linocut by Tim Engelland
Located in Larchmont, NY
Tim Engelland (American, 1950-2012) Little Owl, 2006 Combined lino/woodcut 5 1/2 x 6 1/2 in. Inscribed bottom: 6/50, Little Owl - For Naomi Rosenblum, T. Engelland, 06 This "Little Owl" print was produced as a "thank you" for those who attended or purchased paintings at a show in New York. The key block originally appeared as an illustration for The O-O's Party by Paul Muldoon - published by The Gallery Press, Ireland. Redesigned to accommodate a tonal block, it is limited to an edition of fifty signed copies, printed by the artist on a 19th century proof press with archival inks and papers. A lifelong artist, Engelland specialized in oil portraits and landscapes, and also worked extensively in woodcuts and linocuts. He was born on Jan. 5, 1950, in Ames, Iowa, the son of Charles Wilbur “Will” Engelland and Patricia Fairman Engelland.. Tim grew up in Terre Haute, IN, attending Fairbanks Elementary School and Indiana State University’s Laboratory School. He knew he wanted to be an artist from an early age, and was mentored by Lab School’s John Laska, graduating in 1968. He received a BFA from Temple University’s Tyler School of Art; was a Norfolk Fellow at Yale University; and received his MFA from Cornell University, teaching there for two years after graduation. He spent the majority of his career, from 1976-2004, at Deerfield Academy, a prestigious preparatory school in Deerfield, Mass. There he taught art and photography, coached basketball and lacrosse, and served as faculty resident. When the school began accepting female students, Tim designed The Deerfield Girl, a bronze statue to accompany The Deerfield Boy statue standing in the school’s Memorial Building. Along with John O’Brien and Peter Fallon, Tim founded the Deerfield Press, publisher of limited-edition illustrated poems and stories; James Dickey, John McPhee, and Seamus Heaney are among the authors whom the Press published. For several decades, Tim served on the faculty at the Advanced Placement Summer Institute in St. Johnsbury, Vt., and as a consultant to the College Board. He spent sabbaticals in New York City and Boston, and he has exhibited in galleries in those cities and many other venues. His work can be found in the National Library of Ireland, Boston’s Museum of Fine Arts, and in private collections worldwide. In 2004, Tim returned to Indiana. He was married to Susan Karen Carpenter...
