Carrington & Co Sterling Silver

British

If dishing up exquisite silverware was Carrington & Co.’s bread and butter, trophy cups and royal jewels were the main course. Among the illustrious names that commissioned brooches, tableware, cufflinks and more across its rich history were Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, Edward VII, George V and the Russian Tsars.

Founded in 1873 by John Bodman Carrington, Carrington & Co. came out of a manufacturing business tied to G.R. Collis & Co. It began producing silver plates for restaurants, hotels and ships in 1880, and after nearly 10 years, Carrington & Co. expanded into dealing precious stones and jewelry. Partners William Carrington Smith and George Bruford later joined Carrington, who retired in 1906.

Its silverware matched popular eras of taste, including the ornate and well-decorated Late Victorian style and the light eclecticism that defined Edwardian style. Its trophies, which included the 1921 Prince of Wales Cup, reflected the company’s talent in serveware and further developed its design reach. In the 1920s, Carrington added another royal favorite — natural pearls — to its repertoire with gentlemen’s watches and ladies’ wristlet watches.

Of its numerous royal commissions, the Dorset Bow Royal brooch, Cullinan III brooch and Cullinan IV brooch have achieved the most prestige. The Dorset Bow’s design was said to be drawn from an 1855 piece made for Empress Eugénie. Queen Mary wore the brooch on several occasions before giving it to Princess Elizabeth as a wedding gift.

The Cullinan III and IV brooches were cut from the Cullinan Diamond, the largest gem-quality rough diamond ever found. Queen Mary commissioned them in 1911 as a pair, which were originally set into the band of her crown. They are considered to be the most valuable brooches in the world.

The Carrington & Co. firm was acquired by Collingwood in 1922.

1930s Sterling Silver '3rd Hussars' Inkstand
By Carrington & Co
Located in Jesmond, Newcastle Upon Tyne
An exceptional, fine and impressive, and unusual antique George V sterling silver inkstand with plinth modelled in the form of kettle drums, with military interest; an addition to our inkwell collection This exceptional and unusual, antique George V English cast sterling silver inkstand has been realistically modelled in the form of two kettledrums. Each cast inkwell is embellished with details replicating the rim and shell of the drum. The counterhoop to the upper portion of the drum is ornamented with impressive applied lion mask designs supporting an interlacing twisted rope conjoined to the lower lion mask decorated tuning lugs. The anterior surface of each drum bears a cast and applied Royal coat of arms of the United Kingdom, bearing the motto 'Dieu et mon droit' - God and my right, all above details pertaining to the individual regiment. Each kettledrum is supported by three impressive paw style feet. The hallmarked hinged cover of each piece is realistically modelled in the form of the drum's skin/head and bears an engraved, textured finish. Each cover opens to allow access to the original removable glass liner. The cylindrical liners feature the original hallmarked sterling silver collar and plateaued rim. These impressive instruments are secured to the original painted wood presentation plinth fitted with a shaped rectangular plaque embellished with the contemporary inscription 'Presented to Lieut C. J. F. Platt, 3rd The King's Own Hussars on his marriage by his brother Officers, 9th April 1935. The surface of the wood plinth incorporates an oval recess, composing a pen well. The plinth is fitted with a baize covering to the underside. This unusual silver inkstand has been specially commissioned and crafted by the London silversmiths Carrington & Co. The kettle drum was carried at the head of the regiment during ceremonial parades, and each drum is uniquely ornamented for alternative cavalry regiments. This French motto is used for the coat of arms of the United Kingdom, outside of Scotland. It was first used by Richard I as a battle cry and then adopted by King Henry V...

Questions About Carrington & Co Sterling Silver
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
The legendary American luxury house Tiffany & Co. is currently owned by Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton (LVMH), which completed the acquisition of the company in January, 2021. The firm started out modestly — Charles Lewis Tiffany and John B. Young founded it in Connecticut as a “stationery and fancy goods emporium” in 1837, at a time when European imports still dominated the nascent American luxury market. Upon Charles’ death in 1902, his son Louis Comfort Tiffany took over artistic direction for the brand. On 1stDibs, find authentic Tiffany & Co. pieces from some of the world's top sellers.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 22, 2024
Jacob & Co. is so expensive for a few reasons. For one thing, many of the Swiss watchmaker's timepieces are complicated. One features more than 830 components, each of which must be produced or purchased, tested and painstakingly assembled by hand, adding to the cost. The materials that go into each watch, such as 18-karat gold and genuine diamonds, are costly as well. Plus, only a limited number of timepieces leave the watchmaker's workshop each year, so demand usually far exceeds supply. On 1stDibs, explore a range of Jacob & Co. watches.

To tell if a Tiffany & Co. bracelet is real, first check the overall quality of the piece. Tiffany is revered all over the world, and the storied American luxury house is known for its immaculate craftsmanship and use of high-quality materials. If the accessory is 18k gold, it will be stamped with the number “750.” If it’s sterling silver, it’ll have a “925” stamp, and if it’s platinum, it will feature a “950” stamp. If the bracelet is set with any gemstones, they should be of high clarity and brilliance and evenly set. Diamonds that are selected for use in authentic Tiffany jewelry uphold GIA grading standards. Experts recommend that you work with an appraiser or jewelry industry professional on matters such as determining the authenticity of a given piece. On 1stDibs, find a collection of Tiffany & Co. bracelets from some of the world’s best sellers.
