An exceptional Anglo Japanese rosewood table, stylistically ahead of its time.
The upper and lower edges with tram line details above a pair of opposite Japanese fretwork friezes, on four bowed legs cut from solid rosewood, united by a lower shelf stepped down in the centre, (reminiscent of Godwin's most famous tea table with three hinged side leafs also incorporating a stepped shelf that he designed 1872, in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. I think it was a box that contained some tools.
For many years, soot from the hearth and other parts stuck together and accumulated, resulting in such a black appearance.
Don't worry, this soot won't stick to your hands if you touch it.
It has a very beautiful black color overall and a simple shape.
Good condition.
It is a nice wooden box that makes you feel very wabisabi.
It is also nice to use as a table or exhibition stand.
Things like this are not everywhere.
It's rare.
Also, in Japan, such things are becoming less and less common.
