Hernan Bas Art

American, b. 1978

Artist Hernan Bas is best known for the lively depictions of nineteenth-century-style waifs, mythological creatures and dandies that permeate his Expressionist paintings and prints. Whether they’re cheerful or somber, Bas’s subjects, which are often imbued with humor and homoeroticism, are typically positioned in a richly colored fantastic landscape. He views them as characters in a broader story that he tells throughout his work.

Born in Miami, Florida, Bas had a penchant for drawing and painting as young as four years old. He entered the art magnet program in the Miami public school system, where teachers helped foster his talent and passion for the arts.

Bas entered art school in seventh grade. His post-high school education took shape at the New World School of the Arts of Miami. After graduating in 1996 from New World, Bas enrolled in The Cooper Union — an exclusive arts academy in New York City. He left The Cooper Union after a semester, believing he'd had all the art training he was going to need.

Though he considers himself a painter by trade, Bas enjoys experimenting with other media. He has tried his hand at photography and film, and eventually set up a darkroom in his studio basement.

Bas’s first exhibition took place in 2001 at Miami’s Fredric Snitzer Gallery, and it didn't take long for the art scene to take notice. The artist has since enjoyed a global audience and has had solo and group showings around the world — including New York, Sweden and the United Kingdom.

Bas’s art is held in many public collections including the Art Gallery of Ontario in Toronto, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and the Samuso: Space for Contemporary Art in Seoul, South Korea. He lives and works between Miami and Detroit.

Fading pink (#3)
By Hernan Bas
Located in New York, NY
Hernan Bas is best known for his narratively rich scenes that feature a wide-range of references spanning art and literature, popular culture, kitsch, the occult, religion, and mythology. Across his works, Bas seeks to defamiliarize everyday experience through humor, revealing the surreal and absurd lurking beneath the mundane. In conceiving this flamingo sculpture series, Bas was inspired specifically by the 19th century novel ‘Against Nature’ by Joris-Karl Huysmans. In the novel, the main character, an astute dandy of epic proportions, decides to cover a pet tortoise's shell with ornate jewels in order to see how the light would glimmer on it as it slowly treaded across his carpets. Bas imagined a fictional character of his own, a "Florida Dandy," who would naturally want bright pink flamingos as pets. The ball and chain keep them from flying away and simultaneously constrain them to a certain territory. . . . Fading pink (#3), 2016-2017 resin, feathers, galvanized metal buoy...

Artist: Jim Pallas (1941) Title: Au Natural Cluster Fuck Year: 2019 Medium: Epoxy on ceramic Size: 2.5 x 7 x 5 inches Condition: Excellent Inscription: Signed and dated JIM PALLAS (1941-) American painter, draughtsman, sculptor, and printmaker. An innovator of technological art beginning in the early 1960s, Pallas drew inspiration from his upbringing in Detroit, Michigan where he had early exposure to the automobile industry, its materials and design. He is recognized for having employed electronics and early computer technology to enable his sculptures to respond to external stimuli. Often the circuit boards specifically designed for a particular piece were, themselves, drawings. Throughout his varied career, Pallas has created sculptures and reliefs employing a variety of subjects often imbuing the objects with humor and irony, yet connecting them to everyday life and experiences. Represented by the preeminent Allan Stone Gallery in New York for more than two decades, Pallas’s work has been exhibited in and collected by institutions nationwide including the Detroit Institute of Art, and Columbia University. In legacy, Jim Pallas’s artwork is allied with other innovative masters of the 1960s and 70s including Red Grooms, Larry Rivers, Andy Warhol, Claes Oldenburg, Yaakov Agam, Nam June Paik, Frieder Nake, Leslie Mezei, Georg Nees, A.
