A pair of cased Italian Silver Lipstick (or possibly rouge and lipstick) holders from the early 20th Century. An excellent example of an antique vanity item. Both lipstick holders are marked 800 the silver stamp for continental silver. Each lipstick holder cabochon stone pushes to reveal a flip up mirror section which adds an extra interest to this wonderful item. Imported from Italy for the London/British market this pair of Italian Silver Lipstick holders retailed in a premier London Jewellers. The leather-bound presentation case is lined with ruched pale blue silk and the silk in the lid is embossed in gold lettering indicating this would have originally retailed at PICKETT, Goldsmiths, Oxford Street, London. This inkwell is one of the finest examples we have had in our collection to date. Crafted by the firm 'Dreyfous' the inkwell is made from .800 purity silver, etched crystal and cranberry guilloche enamel. The square form crystal base which sits upon four scroll feet is etched with floral motifs and bordered by gilded .800 purity silver that features panels of rich cranberry guilloche enamel. The central bulbous inkwell features further guilloche enamel that is overlaid with silver garlands and a hinged lid with floral knop. To the inside of the inkwell sits what appears to be its original glass ink liner which is in lovely condition. To the inside rim of the well is engraved 'Dreyfous Paris Londres New York' which helps date the piece to between 1890 and 1920. HASELER WAS FAMED FOR PARTNERING WITH LIBERTY & CO. OF LONDON AND PRODUCING THE WORKS DESIGNED BY ARCHIBALD KNOX. THE SILVER LOCKET PENDANT IS IN THE FORM OF A HEART. William Hair Haseler was born to John and Sarah Evett (Hair) Haseler in 1821/1822 in Birmingham, England. In 1870, Haseler founded the company, W. H. Haseler & Co., specializing in gold and silver work, and jewelry. Five years later, Arthur Lasenby Liberty (1843-1917) started a small shop on the corner of Regent Street in London. Specializing in exotic goods from Japan and the Far East, his business thrived and he became a leading merchant to the upper classes, including famous members of the Pre-Raphaelite movement. The store soon became the most fashionable place to shop in London, featuring luxurious wares including fabrics, clothing, furniture, clocks, jewelry, wallpapers and decorative objects of all kinds. His efforts to promote the Art Nouveau style, with its depiction of leaves and flowers in flowing ornamental lines, were so influential that the term “Stile Liberty” became the accepted term for the style in Italy. The Sciacca Coral has unique origins in the world: it is closely tied to the exceptional history of the Ferdinandea Island, which is a submerged volcanic island in the Strait of Sicily, between Pantelleria and Sciacca. As of today the summit of the Ferdinandea Island remains between about 6 and 8 meters below the Mediterranean Sea level. Its most recent appearance as an island was in July 1831. In the late 1831, in a shoal (called later ”Bummolo” by the fishermen of Sciacca) located around 30 miles from Sciacca, a new island emerged in a fiery hell from the depths of the Strait of Sicily.
