Martin Puryear Prints and Multiples

American, b. 1941

One of the most lauded contemporary American sculptors, Martin Puryear (b. 1941) has had — and continues to have — an impressive career.

Born in Washington, D.C., where he earned a fine art degree from the Catholic University of America in 1963, Puryear started his journey not in fine art, but in craft. As a teen, he learned how to build everything from furniture to musical instruments to canoes. Later, following his undergraduate work, he joined the Peace Corps as a volunteer in Sierra Leone and learned traditional craft methods, including pottery, weaving and woodworking. He then studied printmaking in Sweden before returning to the United States and earning his MFA from Yale University’s School of Art and Architecture. There, he specialized in sculpture.

Blending minimalism with the craft arts, Puryear’s work is often abstract and large scale. His sculptures of hemp rope, wood, bronze and more are studies of both form and material. And beneath the surface, his works touch upon complicated topics, including religion and Black history: Several of his pieces acknowledge iconic Black figures such as Sally Hemings (Thomas Jefferson’s slave and mother to six of his children) and Booker T. Washington, a former slave who became a prominent leader in the Black community and founded what is now Tuskegee University.

Puryear represented the United States at the 1989 Bienal de São Paulo, where he won the festival’s Grand Prize, and at the 2019 Venice Biennale. He has also received the National Medal of Arts, the MacArthur Foundation Fellowship and the Skowhegan Medal for Sculpture. Puryear’s works can be found in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Indianapolis Museum of Art at Newfields in Indiana and the Anderson Collection at Stanford University in California.

Pollonaise No. 24, 1988 by Karl Gerich of Bath - Playing Card Print Sheet
Located in Meinisberg, CH
Karl Alexander Gerich (English, 23.4.1956 - 4.1.2016) Pollonaise No. 24, 1988 - Etching - Sheet ca. 27.8 X 42 cm - No plate mark - Varnished ('Glossy Antique French') Finished, coloured, backed and varnished print likely to be a spare sheet (over production), which were never used. Possibly at some later stage, Karl experimented by partially painting the back with divering number of layers of pink. Held up as finished cards the pink would then shine through the varnished card. By holding up the sheet, this effect can be observed in areas with and without the pink backing. Sheets is in good condition and suitable to be framed. Karl was a brilliant playing card maker and certainly one of the most genius artist-craftsmen I had the pleasure to learn about his work and know. He could do it all: Come up with the tale, weave meaning(s) into it, fill it with spirited characters of his liking, draw it, etch it, print it, colour it and handcraft the inks, paper and card into wondersome packs of playing cards, each of them living in their own, most exquisitely crafted boxes. Every pack a magical marvel, filled with the spirit of this genius card maker … All this he did using his Adana printing press, very simple hand tools and great skill. When Karl closed down his studio in St.Peter’s Terrace in Bath, England and moved to Poplar Close, he sold off work for which he felt he no longer wanted to be the custodian. So a number of prints reached the market then. Printed sheets by Karl Gerich...

Expressive Painting After Picasso catalog 1983 (Basquiat cover)
By after Jean-Michel Basquiat
Located in NEW YORK, NY
Basquiat Cover Art 1983: Rare early 1980s exhibition catalogue published on the occasion of: “Expressive Painting After Picasso”- a group featuring works by: Pablo Picasso, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Francis Bacon, Georg Baselitz, Joan Miro & more at the Beyeler Gallery, Basel Switzerland. Medium: Exhibition catalog 1983; softcover, 48 pages. Dimensions: 10 x 11.5 Inches Very good overall vintage condition. Unsigned from an edition of unknown. Jean-Michel Basquiat’s dramatic life and iconic paintings—which variously feature obsessive scribbling, enigmatic symbols and diagrams, and iconography including skulls, masks, and the artist’s trademark crown—make him one of the most famous artists of the 20th century. The self-taught painter embraced graffiti before committing to a studio practice. He found a mentor and friend in Andy Warhol, who helped the young artist navigate the 1980s New York art world. Across his oeuvre, Basquiat drew on his own Caribbean heritage; a convergence of African American, African, and Aztec cultural histories; classical themes; and pop cultural figures including athletes and musicians. The immediacy and intellectual depth of his paintings won him widespread acclaim both before and after his untimely death at the age of 27. Basquiat’s paintings now belong in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, among others. In 2017, Basquiat’s Untitled (1982) notched $110.5 million at auction and became the most expensive artwork by an American artist to ever be sold. Related Categories: Basquiat ephemera. 1960s James Rosenquist F-111 announcement
By (after) James Rosenquist
Located in NEW YORK, NY
James Rosenquist F-111 announcement: Vintage original folding exhibition pamphlet published on the occasion of a 1960’s exhibition in Stockholm at the Museet Moderna: September 29th-October 18th 1965. Features a reproduction of Rosenquist’s famed “F-111”. Folding out to four portions, the reverse chronicles an extensive interview (in Swedish) between Rosenquist & the museum. Rare and highly collectible. Medium: Offset printed fold-out museum pamphlet. Condition: Quattro fold-lines as issued; good overall vintage condition. Dimensions: 5.5 x 11 inches (opening to 5.5 x 44 inches). Unsigned from an edition of unknown; rare. Rosenquist began the painting F-111 in 1964, in the middle of the Vietnam War. He positioned his main subject, the F-111 military plane, which was in development at the time, flying through fragmented images of consumer products and references to war. Through its expansive network of colliding visual motifs, F-111 addresses the connections between the Vietnam War, income taxes, consumerism, and advertising. James Rosenquist was an American Pop artist known for his monumental paintings and prints. Often appropriating commercial imagery, his montage-like works combined popular culture, surrealism, and historical painting methods. “Much of the aesthetic of my work comes from doing commercial art,” the artist once said. “I painted pieces of bread, Arrow shirts...
