Mendel Samayoa Art

Born in Guatemala, Mendel Samayoa and his family discovered his artistic skills at a very young age. His dad was a cartoonist and although Samayoa was encouraged to pursue his passion, he was required to obtain a formal education in a more practical field. He continued architecture degree for many years while he organized his own artwork exhibits throughout Guatemala. Eventually, he moved to Chile to pursue his artistic career full-time as a filmmaker and visual artist. During his extended time in Chile, Mendel explored new visual expressions and started experimenting with acrylic, oil and ink. In 2000, Mendel returned to Guatemala and established a combined practice including film-making, visual arts and theater. He settled in Antigua Guatemala where he also collaborated with other artists to form the region’s first cooperative, CAOS now known as the CAOS Galleria. The venue allowed Mendel more frequent exhibits and provided for a wider exposure throughout Guatemala City, Quetzaltenango, Antigua, and Sololá. The added exposure initiated a series of international shows in France, Honduras, USA and UK. During this time, he obtained his graduate degree in Architecture as a goal he had always wanted to obtain. Today, Mendel Samayoa continues his work as a visual artist incorporating the disciplines of film making, architecture, theater and photography into all his pieces.
