Nicholas Nixon Art

American, b. 1947
Born 1947, Detroit, Michigan; lives and works in Boston, Massachusetts. Nicholas Nixon received a B.A. from the University of Michigan in 1969 and an M.F.A. from the University of New Mexico in 1975. Nixon is well known for his large format documentary style photography. His projects have incorporated a range of subjects including an ongoing portrait series of his wife, Bebe, and her three sisters, the intimacy of couples, daily life in the rural south, cityscapes, and the sick and dying. Throughout his work, Nixon captures the expressive tonalities of the people he photographs. Nixon is the recipient of two John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowships and three National Endowment for the Arts Photographer’s Fellowships. His work is included in the permanent collections of the Art Institute of Chicago; the Metropolitan Museum of Art; the Cleveland Museum of Art; the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, to name a few.
