Walter Gropius Doors and Gates

German, 1883-1969

As the founder of the Bauhaus — the German art and design school that was one of the chief crucibles of modernismWalter Gropius had a central and enduring impact on the architecture and design of the 20th century and beyond. Along with fellow Bauhaus principals such as Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Marcel Breuer, Gropius championed a philosophy of design focused on simplicity, efficiency and the inherent beauty of steel, glass and other industrial materials.

Born in Berlin, Gropius followed in his architect father’s footsteps and after completing his studies was employed by the brilliant proto-modernist designer Peter Behrens. Gropius’s early architectural work demonstrated many of the aspects that define the modernist aesthetic: ribbon windows, an emphasis on light and minimal decoration. Gropius became known primarily as a great organizer, writer and teacher. After military service in World War I, he developed concepts of what are now called the applied arts — a marriage of creative imagination with practical skill and technology. These notions drove Gropius’s founding of the Bauhaus in 1919. The school would welcome many of the great creators of the 20th century, including Paul Klee, Laszlo Moholy-Nagy and Josef Albers. After the independent-minded college fell afoul of the Nazi regime in the 1930s, Gropius immigrated to the United States, and finished out his years on the Harvard faculty.

Gropius produced far fewer furniture designs than his fellows on the Bauhaus faculty, but what he did make has a purity of form and spirit. As you will see from the works offered on 1stDibs, Walter Gropius never compromised his vision of design that encompassed beauty, creativity and the highest level of technical skill.

Polished Solid Brass Batlló Door Handle by Antoni Gaudi - Set of 2
By Antoni Gaudí
Located in Barcelona, ES
Solid cast brass with polished finish. A company that has always attributed such great importance to the author of the designs could never forget the great figures in history. That is why the BD catalogue of contemporary creations has always included those by admired classical masters. Antoni Gaudí (1852/1926) is, without doubt, the most internationally well-known Spanish architect. But is not only his buildings and brilliant architectural solutions that have travelled the globe. His integrated conception of architecture led him to pay attention, not only to structural calculations, but also to all the decorative elements, including furniture, that would form part of the building. The admiration felt by modern designers for the furniture designed by Gaudí has not gone unnoticed by BD which was the first company to rescue them from history by embarking on their serial production using...

Set of 9 Art Nouveau Hand Beaten Bronze Door Handles with Plates
Located in Dallas, TX
Presenting a gorgeous and unique set of 9 Art Nouveau hand beaten bronze door handles with plates. Amazingly complete set! Probably made in the US circa 1910 and most definitely influenced by the English New Lyn School of Arts and Crafts Era hand-beaten copper pieces. These are without doubt Art Nouveau in style and from the period. They were salvaged from a Mansion in Dallas that was built in 1929. We are of the opinion that these were ‘custom made’ pieces. They are unmarked and unsigned and they appear to be made of bronze with a brass and copper mix. The Set consists of: 6 double sided classic door handles/knobs with central lock pin – suitable for door of a minimum of 1.5 inches thick but can accommodate thicker door. Each of these 6 also come with their original back plates (x12) and keyhole covers (x12) for either side of the door. 2 handles/knobs with central lock pin but with small knob on backside- suitable for door of a minimum of 1.5 inches thick but can accommodate thicker door. This pair also has their original (front) back plates and a Yale back plate on the rear. 1 double sided turning door handles/knobs with turning central lock pin – suitable for door of a minimum of 1.5 inches thick but can accommodate thicker door. This also comes with it’s original back plates (x2). 1 Spare Keyhole cover, 2 spare back plates, 1 Spare plain Bronze Turning Knob with pin and 2 spare Hand-beaten Bronze Turning Knobs with pins. TOTAL OF 63 PIECES! These were originally used in the Mansion we rescued them from, with Yale Mortice Locks (a number of which we have listed separately in this category). The fact that they are hand beaten bronze, is highly unusual in itself as most of these types of pieces were copper. Also, we rescued these from the now demolished Mansion along with the UNIQUE hand beaten Bronze Door Straps...
