Beautiful 'elemento luminose' , illuminated wall sculpture designed by the renowned italian sculptors Nerone Ceccarelli & Giovanni Patuzzi (Gruppo NP2) for the gallery 'Forme and Superfici'. Turin,Italy in 1970. The panel has the engraved signature of both Nerone and Patuzzi and still bears the original 'forme and superfici' paper label to the rear of the panel. This sculpture is published in an original 'Forme e Superfici catalog' and the January 1971 issue of the renowned italian design periodical 'Interni-La rivista dell Arredamento'. The central disc features a beautiful abstract hand crafted sculptural relief motif on metal , probably zinc, which is illuminated by a hidden fluorescent tube light. The frame surrounding the central sculptural disc is finished in stove enameled steel over a wood structure and features copper detailing.
One of Nerone and Patuzzi's best known works is the enormous , 150 square metre, bas relief in zinc that they created in 1972 for the 'hemicycle' of the then new 'Schulman' building (1973) in Luxembourg which housed the early meetings of the European Parliament . The hemicycle was beautifully decorated following a project by the architect Simonis, combining different materials (leather, wood, metal) in a geometrical harmony, the whole integrated by Nerone and Patuzzi's huge zinc bas-relief on the rear wall. The zinc models were engraved using an etching technique, representing geometrical and abstract figures, and mounted on a surface of 150 square metres. The bas-relief was considered at the time to be the biggest sculpture in metal of the world.

Impressive handcrafted, sculptural relief table lamp by French artist and sculptor 'PH Jean'. The four beautiful relief panels, clearly influenced by the 'op art' movement of the period, are all composed from built up layers of white Lucite, stainless steel and brass, there are two different relief pattern designs set front and back and left and right ie matching relief patterns are set on opposing faces to each other , one pair of relief panels have a white Lucite background one of which bears the engraved artists' signature 'PH Jean' and the other two relief panels are set on a stainless steel background. Please refer to detail photos. The small inset base is composed from white Lucite.
The lamp has been rewired and still retains the original linen shade but this needs replacing as it is torn and stained and has only been kept as a template from which to make a matching new shade.
A classic piece of chic refined French design the kind for design often seen in a Philippe Grange, David Hicks or Francois Catroux interior, would look great alongside other classic French works of the same perios such as Maria Pergay, Philippe Hiquily, Michel Boyer, Guy De Rougemont, Francois Morrelet etc
Philippe Jean twice won the "lampe d'or of creation' in France , the gold prize for lighting design and also a silver medal at the 'Salon des artistes Decoratifs' in Paris during this period. Please see image 4 for a copy of an article which confirms these prizes.
PH Jean also designed a highly collectable illuminated coffee table for the highly prestigious and renowned Galerie Eric and Xiane Germain, Paris, 1970. Here we have an example of the very rare and famous light sculpture created by the artist Werner Epstein and edited in a very small edition by 'Inter Neo', France in 1970. It is both beautiful in its elegant sculptural form and in its magical , ethereal lighting effect. This design was exhibited at the 1972 'Salon des Artistes et Decorateurs' held at the Grand Palais des champs Elysees in Paris, and is published in the original exhibition catalogue. Unfotunately the static images can only capture just a very basic static idea of some of the light formations created as the sculptural spiral aluminum element slowly rotates as it captures the rising thermal energy emitted by the concealed incandescent light bulb in the base , there is no motor , just pure physics and poetry in motion. I have to repeat that the static photos really do not do this beautiful design any justice at all, the slowly evolving swirling ribbons of light reflecting off the surface of the slowly rotating aluminum spiral create a magical , organic and otherworldly lighting effect which is initially captured on the polished surface of the spiral element itself before being thrown outward as continuous swirling ribbons of light which are captured on the surfaces of the walls, floor and ceiling creating an extremely ethereal ,soothing and meditative lighting effect..
This is one of the most famous ,beautiful and rare of all the French avant garde lighting...
