"You Silly Billy", Figurative Ceramic Sculpture, Porcelain, Glaze, Underglaze
By Kyungmin Park
Located in St. Louis, MO
Kyungmin Park is a figurative ceramic sculptor drawing inspiration from childlike perspectives. Contrasting the darker emotions and restricted psyche of adulthood with the boundless consciousness of children, Kyungmin’s sculptures confront the view with uncomfortable juxtapositions, encouraging reflection upon personal expectations and narratives. Kyungmin largely uses handbuilding techniques to construct her figures out of porcelain, a material she prefers for its ability to contrast starkly with bright and colorful decoration. Originally from South Korea, Kyungmin earned her MFA in Ceramics from the University of Georgia in 2012 and her BFA from the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University in 2008. Currently, Kyungmin is an Assistant Professor of 3D studio Art at Endicott College in Beverly...

Contemporary, Geometric, Ceramic, Vessel, Sculpture, Stoneware, Glaze, Design
By Judith Ernst
Located in St. Louis, MO
Originally from the Northwest with a B.A. from Stanford University, I have painted, published illuminated books, and lived and traveled extensively in Asia. Now working primarily in ceramics, I draw images from the deep well of past experience, always starting from a strong “mind’s eye” vision. My ceramic pieces are as much about their inside as they are about their sculpted outside. Implied are the dichotomies between the inner and outer, between that which is hidden and that which is seen, between the esoteric and the exoteric, between the soul and the body. I continue to create “Metaphysical Pots” that feature water both inside and outside, becoming metaphorically both the Water of Life and the Infinite Ocean, symbolizing the continuous process between creation and transcendence. Other pieces include shapes that repeat in a pattern that follows the form of the vessel. It is a “bio-geometry” that leads the eye back to the inside of the vessel, a “Jacob’s Ladder” that leads not just up but in. Using sculptural techniques, I cut through the wall of the pot to get more depth and dynamic movement. I continue to push the limits of my medium, taking apart thrown vessels and reconfiguring them in new ways. Outcroppings 02, Repeating Geometric Ceramic Vessel...

"Scaffolding with Yellow", Contemporary, Porcelain, Sculpture, Glaze, Porcelain
By Peter Johnson
Located in St. Louis, MO
My work explores transformation using the kiln as a vehicle for deconstruction. The porcelain grid systems become an architecture over which to stretch a fluid skin that warps or collapses the structures under the strain of the firing. They expose the relationship between soft and hard, the fluidity of a membrane, and the moment of intersection between these contrasting elements. They pair labored construction with unpredictability, and capture the entropy embodied in the process. Bio: Peter Christian Johnson is currently Assistant professor of Art at Kent State University after serving for more then decade as the head of the ceramics department at Eastern Oregon University. He earned his MFA from Penn State University and a BS in Environmental Science at Wheaton College. Peter has been a Visiting Artist at the Alberta College of Art and Design, Australian National University, the University of Florida...
