Jamie Harris straddles the disciplines of painting and glass blowing approaching his work, “more from a painterly perspective than as a traditional glassblower.” His work is primarily about something simple: ”loud splashes of color, capturing the innate way glass transmits, reflects, and absorbs color.” The viewer often witnesses this sensitivity through a number of techniques and forms that Harris has mastered: “from the strictness of my blown work to the organic looseness of my fused panels,” he uses color systems and theory to develop his forms. Yet the other critical layer to Harris’s work is expressive and visceral. The colors are intended to imprint an immediate emotion on the viewer’s experience of his objects as a very direct experience of color. Harris also straddles divergent historical epoch’s: “I merge a classic Venetian sensibility with a modernist approach.” blending the look of Murano glass with Twentieth Century modernism as typified by the Bauhaus, Harris hybridizes the functionality of vessel and the aesthetics of sculpture. Perry Haas is a ceramic artist making functional pottery and focusing on wood-firing techniques. Drawing from a love for the wood-fired ceramic surface, Perry looks to anticipate the manner in which ash in the kiln will collect in different arrays across the convex and concave surfaces of his gestural clay forms. “I approach making with a childlike spirit of experimentation and exploration. My work stems from a love of the wood fired ceramic surface, particularly how it evokes many beautiful natural phenomena. Like imagining the way wind gathers and deposits leaves on a landscape according to changes in topography, I anticipate the manner in which ash will collect differently on the convex and concave surfaces of my gestural forms. Bonnie Seeman grew up in Miami, Florida with a propensity towards anatomy illustration and the dazzling colors and rich foliage of the Miami landscape. Developing her technique with porcelain and glass, Seeman channeled her inspirations; resulting in vessels that are both beautiful and macabre. Combinations of muscular and skeletal anatomy and plant forms are the makeup of these sculptural utilitarian vessels. Instead of dwelling on dying, Seeman’s palpable forms culminate in an acute awareness and awe toward life, renewal, nature, and vitality. Shortly after completing her master’s degree in Fine Arts, Seeman was recognized by Galeria OMR in Mexico City, a gallery known for its cutting-edge artists. In effect, Seeman’s porcelain was taken out of the craft context and placed in exhibitions such as ARCO in Madrid, FIAC in Paris, and Art Basel. She shows extensively throughout the United States and was recipient of the Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation 2005 Biennial Competition Award. Small’s work includes porcelain figurines and lace-like steel chandeliers inspired by branches and twigs he has documented during his travels. While in China, Small’s porcelain forms developed as visual communicators, in a culture where he didn’t speak the language. Like tattoos, Small’s glaze imagery of colorful Chinese trucks, buses, traditional motifs, nature and ornament float on the skin of his two primary porcelain forms, Talk Bubbles and Ghosts. Small’s steel chandeliers contain echoes of the opulent past of the 17th & 18th century, but have been set free of function and the restraint of tradition. Constructed of filigreed steel cut by computer controlled machines, the chandeliers are composed of “fins” of metal lace, hinged around a central axis. Small’s chandeliers are suspended sculptures that question the origins of ornamental habits. Major stylistic revolutions such as Bauhaus or Pop demolish definitions and use of ornament, but many old habits slip through the cracks.
