This Italian trumeau mirror, hand-carved circa 1780, features a 20 ½” H x 38” W mirror set beneath a maritime oil painting. The giltwood frame has angular protrusions in the upper corner, each filled with a small, raised floret. An egg-and-dart border graces the edges of the frame, interrupted by stepped-out plinths at the bottom corners. Both the mirror pane and the painting are surrounded by bead and reel motifs.
The wonderfully executed painting depicts a bustling harbor filled with vessels from three different countries. A majority of the crafts feature English flags, while there is one from the Netherlands, with the third representation being a flag from the nation of Catalonia, which would later become an autonomous state in Spain. The blue sky, filled with white fluffy clouds, provides good weather for the numerous boats and ships navigating the choppy waters. Very mountainous terrain can be seen in the background, with a white lighthouse and a blue roof on the shore. In front of the highlands is tall Romanesque architecture comprised of several niches, transoms, and bricked columns topped with flowing greenery. One such country was Italy and in particular, Venice, where this unusual carved walnut centerpiece was hand-carved, circa 1780. A large shell-form bowl with volute leaf embellishments is being held by three putti emerging from an undulating base. The wave pattern is reminiscent of a foaming sea, further indicated by the stylized dolphin tails emerging from the spray. All of the tails are textured with a lozenge-patterned background, protruding as high-relief elements. On the underside, the scalloped tips of the water swing down in three areas, forming well-disguised feet. As a transitional age in French history, the Regence period is known for furniture that showcases forms of the preceding period (Louis XIV), as well as early Louis XV stylings. In the case of this bleached oak partner’s desk, the motifs are prefigures of the Rococo style of Louis XV, while still maintaining the rectilinear form often seen with Louis XIV furnishings. Hand-carved in France in the early 1900s, the oak wood has been bleached more recently, resulting in a warm, golden brown hue with some fascinating wood grains.
A cavetto molding graces the top on all sides, even in the slightly recessed areas above the leg holes. Both sides of the desk have been carved identically, with three belt drawers featuring arabesque margents with foliate shells and thin molding. Similar vertical carvings flank the doors, which are rectangular panels adorned with geometric and foliate motifs. Both doors to the right of the leg hole open to reveal three pull-out drawers, while the doors to the left front three shelves. The rectilinear form is softened by eight short cabriole legs, each with a paw foot pad, beneath a sinuous apron embellished with a foliate shell medallion over thin molding.
