These new small-scale paintings were created using gouache on handmade paper. Alexandra Rutsch Brock then “drew” with a sewing machine using various colored threads. Using the thread as a painted line, playing with the marks and motifs the machine allows that creates contrast in both surface and color. They are sewn directly with no preliminary sketches, just instinctive gesture, sometimes in a similar color to enhance a texture, other times contrasting as a new element. The entangled threads that dangle down emphasize the materiality. Working so closely to the surface, she is aware of the senses of seeing, breathing, touching and feeling……………escaping into these new surfaces.

Described by New York Times critic Ken Johnson as a combination of “painterly verve and hellish beauty” — Mitty's work has long been concerned with examining and amplifying the intrinsic abstract beauty of deteriorating or overlooked corners of urban architecture and interiors. In 2015, one object, the chandelier, rose up from detritus to dominate her body of work. Spectacular, illuminated and intricate, the chandelier is evocative of grandeur. In contrast, for much of Mitty's career, scrap yards and other sites of urban devastation, locations of organized chaos, formally beautiful, yet apocalyptic and terrifying. Similarly, the chandeliers speak of decadence, sadness, elegance, death and hope.
By 2017, the chandeliers began to open and morph into architecture in the round. Gazebos and scrap dominate a verdant post-apocalyptic landscape...

Norma Marquez Orozco explores concepts of impermanence, perception, form and balance through physical movement of the work itself in a lucid, game-like context, like puzzles. All the elements are made of paper, molded into three-dimensional forms. The repetitive geometric shapes are assembled inside boxes built out of translucent paper. The arrangement is random and unfixed to allow movement and unpredictable composition.
The harmonies and tensions in the work arise from different exchanges between the colors, the patterns, and the geometric and organic shapes, as well as the sense that change is constantly occurring as the elements shift and move.
When one looks at these compositions, you see them for the first time, every time, because what is creating and completing the artwork is always changing; such as light, weather and forms merge and interact. As a result of these dynamic relationships, the work extends beyond her personal hand, sustaining an appearance and composition entirely of its own.

Chicago,
Illinois,
and
raised
in
Guadalajara,
Jalisco,
Mexico.
Her work can be seen as an investigation into the way relationships emerge and evolve when elements like color, form, shape, lines, angle and pattern are blended, shifted and layered.

has hosted
lectures
and
artist
talks
for
the
public. In
2001
she founded
Floor4Art, an
alternative
space
in
West
Harlem
that
houses
artist’s
studios
