An absolute eye-catcher, this intricately cast and beautifully detailed necklace is crafted of solid 18 karat yellow gold with a brilliant array of gemstones set within each individually cast and hinged link. These culminate in the stunning central focal point display of a 3.1 carat blue sapphire surrounded by marquis-cut rubies and flanked on either side by a curved row of diamonds. It wears comfortably at approximately 16" in overall wearable length.

A rare example of Pierre Lenordez's early work, this fine sand-cast bronze model of a halting stallion showcases the powerful animal as he is stopping his forward motion, rearing slightly as he shifts his weight to his back legs. The model is beautifully chased and a wonderful hammered texture to the hair and texture from the original wax mold replicated in the bronze under the translucent brown surface patina. The model is signed on the back corner of the naturalistic base in his typical script, "P. Lenordez".
Born in Saint-Vaast-la-Hougue, in the district of Manche in northwestern France, Pierre Lenordez eventually established himself in Caen where he would become a professor and teach at the Fine Arts Academy of Caen for a decade, accepting under his tutelage the Romantic sculptor of renown Arthur Jacques Leduc...

An unusually fine example of Lenordez's work, he modeled Monarque with a surface ahead of its time through a marriage of exacting technical representation of the proud stallion and a modernistic mottled texturing of the body that is tangible. The viewer can almost feel the stylus in the artist's hand as it feverishly works the body to push and shape the wax, scuffing and scraping the skin of the horse in a chaotic fervor. This has been captured with utmost integrity by the renowned house of Duplan et Salles, the quality of the sand-casting simply above reproach with crisp replication of the artist's intent evident in every quarter.

A rare and exciting pair of Grand Tour busts after Antiquity, each is executed in bronze and finished in a Herculaneum black patina with hints of verde in the underlying surface by the foundry of J. Chiurazzi of Naples. Foundry seals are located on their shoulders verso.
The first is a fine cast of Homer after the marble bust of Antiquity formerly in the Farnese collection and currently in the permanent collection of the National Archaeological Museum of Naples. It depicts the aged Greek poet and author of the Illiad and the Odyssey as a bearded man dressed in a tunic with a ribbon holding back his hair while concerned wrinkles line his forehead. His eyes are empty and devoid of anything, the absence alluding to his blindness while the sheer intensity of his spirit overwhelms the viewer. His simple garment are a reminder of his poverty.
The second bust known as "Pseudo Seneca" is cast after the original bust of antiquity found in 1754 at Herculaneum in the Villa of the Papyri, the home of Lucius Calpurnius Piso Caesoninus, father-in-law of Julius Caesar. The estate was buried in the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. A very scarce example of Bitter's work, this fluid and beautifully captured model depicts of a showdown between a greyhound and a household cat. The freshness of the mold it was captured from is self-evident with a nearly total absence of any notable cold-tooling throughout the surfaces. The signature is sharp to the touch, raised as if Bitter's stylus has only just shaped the wax of the model it was cast from. The untouched original surface patina is brilliant with a chaotic interplay of colors from vivid verdigris to autumnal browns and oranges. An exquisite and rare example of Paul Philippe's Mischievous finished in a brilliant polychromed gilt, the young woman grabs her reddish-brown hair in hand while looking off into the corner with a sly look in her eyes that suggests she holds a secret that we will never know. The base signature is captured directly from the mold. Situated over its original faceted base. A very fine work.
ARTIST
Born in Thorn in Poland in 1870, Paul Philippe studied under Antonin Larroux at the École des Beaux-Arts after moving to Paris, France around 1900. He exhibited extensively at all of the major French salons and developed his own voice in sculpture by focusing his ouevre around the movement of the female body, often depicting exotic models in highly theatrical poses with a loose adherence to realism in his idealized visions. He walked a fine line between Art Nouveau and Art Deco while his figures do tend towards the latter. He executed figures in bronze and chryselephantine and worked with some of the best foundries in France and Germany. Many examples of his work are held in the Art Deco Museum in Moscow, Russia.

A very fine lifetime casting of Charles Korschann's Putto Riding a Doe, the model is steeped in the elements of the Art Nouveau with a distinct celebration of the naturalistic. The putto grasps a simple harp in his hand while a loose garment bound in a belt encircling his waist billows in the unseen wind. The doe looks on with disinterest, unconcerned about its surroundings and almost at one with its rider. It is a carefully composed idealization of the natural world and the potential for harmony between man and beast. The casting is exquisite, typical of work from Louchet, and is finished in a medium-brown translucent patina.
Charles Korschann
Born in Brno, Monrovia in 1872 as Charles Korschmann, later dropping the "m" to appear less Germanic, he studied at the fine arts academies of Vienna, Berlin and Paris before finally establishing himself in Paris in 1894. He spent his entire career working in Paris, exhibiting at the 1900 Exposition Universelle where he was awarded a Bronze Medal and from 1894 through 1905 at the Société des Artistes Français.
His work is very distinctive and immediately recognizable, a most important trait as an artist and a particular accomplishment in light of the output of his contemporaries. He was to sculpture what Alphonse Mucha was to graphics, both men originating from the same province in Czechoslovakia and having similar influences in Paris. It is rather fitting that he would execute a bust of Alphonse Mucha for the Museum of Brno in honor of his accomplishments.

The young woman is serious in her composure with a quiet strength, her eyes slightly downcast in the clothing of a common girl, her diaphonous garment sliding off one shoulder while the overall sculpture remains chaste and elusive. The surface is finished in a two-toned patina, the reddish-oxide surface being utilized for the flesh tones and a darker brown for the base and garments. ARTIST
Born in Lille, France, little is known about the life of Emmanuel Villanis, despite the fact that he has a simply incredible level of output during the years of 1880-1920. First exhibiting at Salon in 1886, he went on to exhibit nearly five-hundred models, almost exclusively featuring the female form with strong influence of the Art Nouveau movement evident in every aspect of his work. He received honorable mention at the 1889 Exposition Universelle, Paris.

An exquisite and very rare casting of an Aberdeen-Angus bull, an unusual and distinctive breed of cattle from Scotland, this sculpture by Isidore Jules Bonheur is almost without a doubt cast by the foundry of his brother-in-law Hippolyte Peyrol and a rather early model as well in light of the distinctive construction method. In her text on the selection of 46 animal bronzes in the collection of the Georgia Museum of Art, Eleanor Luciano notes regarding this model that "Bonheur is never recorded to have been to Scotland, where he would have seen this unusual breed. Rosa Bonheur painted in Scotland, and its seems likely that Isidore would have drawn the idea for this bull either from one of her sketches or from an agricultural show in France. The animal's rich mane and strong modeling make this one of the most successful." Notable is the very fine surface patination which exhibits a glassy finish with a complex range of colors presenting in the body of the bull, overall being medium brown but augmented with an underlying reddish hue against auburn highlights. The base is signed "I. BONHEUR" in the typical manner.
