Maurice EMPI
The Final Stretch

circa 1980s

About the Item

'The Final Stretch', pastel on weighted art paper, by Maurice Empi (circa 1980s). One can almost feel the excitement of the horse race from this exuberant and colourful work of art. A recurring theme in Empi's work comes from his love of the races - the colours, the crowds and of course the horses all figure in this vibrant work. In this piece, the thoroughbreds are in full stride mounted by their colourful jockeys as they approach the finish line. This could be Longchamps or Deauville. No matter, the excitement of the races knows no bounds. But adding this artwork to your home or workspace will enliven your room and give you an edge the next time you have a day at the races. In good overall condition - newly framed and glazed. Signed: 'Maurice Empi' in the lower right corner. A short video of the piece is available upon request. About the Artist: Maurice Empi was born in Saint Etienne in the Loire Valley in France in 1933. In 1949 he enrolled in the 'Ecole Technique Supérieur de Art et Publicité' in Montparnasse, Paris. His professor and friend, Marcel Basler, also an artist, convinced him to abandon his studies in advertising and graphic design to dedicate his life to art. He's never looked back. His first private exhibition was held in Paris in 1953 and his reputation quickly propelled his work overseas to Stockholm in 1955, London in 1959 and Nagoya and Tokyo in 1971. His works are decidedly collectible and increasing in value as he approaches his mid-eighties. Empi's works have been sold at major auction houses worldwide and held in many civic and private collections. His painting themes feature views of Paris and Venice, horse racing, sailing regattas, musicians and their orchestras and French cafés. By Yves Brayer

'Horses at the Edge of the Pond', pencil, ink and watercolour on art paper, by Yves Brayer (1980). Brayer loved the Camargue region of France and painted it widely. The Camargue is a vast, swampy delta near Arles, very exotic, with tall marsh grasses where pink flamingos, black bulls and white horses roam freely. This image depicts three horses in the Camargue near pond's edge. Although there are many horses that still run free in the area, there are cowboys — called gardians — who ride the white horses on the beaches...

  • Chinatown, San Francisco
    By Edward Wilson Currier

'Chinatown, San Francisco', gouache on fine art paper, by Edward Wilson Currier (1903). Spofford Alley in San Francisco's Chinatown is best known for an address (number 36) where Dr. Sun Yat-Sen plotted the overthrow of China's last dynasty. During Prohibition, it was the site of turf battles over local bootlegging and protection rackets. Today it is lined with seniors' community centres. However, the quiet alley livens up in the evenings when a Chinese orchestra strikes up a tune, mah-jongg games begin with a cascade of clicking tiles, and barbers and florists use the pretence of sweeping their doorsteps to gossip. In this artist's depiction, a man smokes a long-stemmed Chinese pipe under the awning and colourful lanterns hanging from the wooden supports while a child looks on. The artwork is interesting from several standpoints including architectural, cultural and historical. Shortly after this work was painted, the neighbourhood was completely destroyed in the 1906 earthquake that levelled most of the city. From 1910 to 1940, Chinese immigrants were detained at the Angel Island...
