Myth of Sisyphus II (Abstract thought returns to prop of flesh) - (Pink+Black)
Located in Gilroy, CA
"Myth of Sisyphus II (Abstract thought returns to prop of flesh)" is an original contemporary painting by Georgia-based artist Vivian Liddell. This work is part of her new 2022 series titled "Myth of Sisyphus." As a multidisciplinary artist, Liddell brings a dynamic approach to her vivid, colorful two-dimensional pieces. This particular piece has a bold contrast between black chains and a pastel background. From the artist: "Gender and power are core concepts in my work. I’ve spent two decades in “The Classic City” (Athens, Georgia), surrounded by a dual Greek culture. Fraternities and sororities separate students by gender and play a part in cementing gender roles and power structures for the next generation; ubiquitous Classical architecture (often accompanied by manicured landscape) is a constant reminder of Western ideals. After a career of painting the female figure and exploring themes related to the male gaze and the lingering inequalities that women face, I’ve focused the past five years on the male figure and his domain. My education was dominated by Western art history, where women were seen as muses; I’m reversing this traditional dynamic between the male artist/intellectual and his female subject. I create tiny “plays” with handmade props and puppet plasticine figures to reenact imagined dramas that might happen on any given home game day...

This work is part of her new 2022 series titled "Myth of Sisyphus." As a multidisciplinary artist, Liddell brings a dynamic approach to her vivid, colorful two-dimensional pieces. This particular piece contrasts boldly between white forms and chains in the foreground and dark blue background. From the artist: "Gender and power are core concepts in my work. The Midnight Riders - Large Textural Abstract Energetic Artwork on Canvas
Located in Los Angeles, CA
This large textural abstract energetic artwork on canvas by Togolese artist Olympio is a unique mixed media painting with a raw and direct aesthetic, providing an unfiltered manifestation of the artist's soul. Its expressive brushstrokes and vibrant color palette and the incorporation of an additional piece of canvas to the surface add an extra dimension of texture and interest to this already captivating piece. Olympio's raw and direct approach to mixed media and collage on canvas creates a tactile experience that provides a captivating insight into the artist's creative vision. Bright, energetic marks encircle rough textures that are perfectly balanced by the peaceful compositions beneath, creating a sense of harmony and balance in this exceptional artwork. This large 48-inch high by 60-inch wide mixed media painting is signed by Olympio on the back of the canvas. The many layers in his work emphasize the texture and visceral nature of his canvases. The painting is wired and ready to hang. Free local Los Angeles delivery. Affordable U.S. and global shipping is available. A Certificate of Authenticity issued by Artplex Gallery is included. For the abstract artist Olympio, art is a dance of textures and colors, woven from an eclectic medley of canvas and textiles. Each stroke on his canvas is a nod to the classical ideals of modern abstraction, a harmonious blend of purpose and spontaneity. The linens and canvases he selects have borne witness to various conditions and interactions, embracing the imprints of their past experiences. Olympio meticulously stretches, glues, and layers these diverse fabrics together, infusing them with additional layers of acrylic paint, a fusion of careful craft and serendipitous revelation. In Olympio's art, deliberate strokes mingle with accidental splashes, forming a mesmerizing canvas that speaks to the ethos of modernism's evolution. It's a reminder that the legends of yesteryears now manifest as a distinct style, a testament to their enduring influence. His mastery over the medium amplifies, imbuing each piece with a romantic essence carefully counterbalanced by his practiced modesty. The strokes, swirling and turbulent, are immersed in a rich, opulent application of paint, akin to an expansive honeysuckle-pink landscape or a brooding soot-gray abyss. Yet within this whirlwind of impressions, Olympio maintains a sense of purpose, an elusive process that surrenders control to the animated paint and sculptural fabrics. Olympio possesses a rare duality, orchestrating the delicate balance between sensuality and subtlety within his creations. Navigating these opposing forces, he transcends distractions and attains the perfect pitch, crafting a visual symphony that resonates deeply. Olympio was born into a large family of eight children in Lomé, Togo, West Africa. He began his creating art by using building scraps to make sculptures. By the time he was in high school, he started to experiment with mixed-media and collage. He later transitioned to acrylic and oil on canvas. In 2001, Olympio left his home in Africa to live in Paris. Olympio moved to the United States in 2003 and has continued to paint. His work has been exhibited at Art Basel Miami, where in 2018 he was ranked one of the Top 10 Artists by Red Dot Miami. He was also recently interviewed for France 2, TV5Monde, and the BBC. His work has been exhibited and collected internationally. He received a BA in aesthetics from the University of Tokyo in 1956 where he also studied music and art history. After graduating, he studied for a year with composer Thrasybulus Georgiades Georgiades at the University of Munich and for two years with composer Woflgang Fortner at the International Music College in Freiburg. He attended the International Summer Courses for New Music in Darmstadt in 1957, when he met Karlheinz Stockhausen, and in 1958, when he met John Cage. Cage, and through him Marcel Duchamp, had a significant influence on Paik as he became a major force in the avant-garde through performances. In Hommage à John Cage (1959), Paik employed audiotape and performance to attack traditional musical instrumentation and compositional practices, splicing together piano playing, screaming, bits of classical music, and sound effects. Realizing that taped sound was not enough, he decided to move into performance, first by introducing performative actions into his audio works. In 1961 Paik performed Simple, Zen for Head and Étude Platonique No. 3, in which he became a volatile figure, thrashing about in unexpected patterns and sudden movements to his signature soundtracks. In 1962 Paik participated in the Fluxus International Festival of the New Music in Weisbaden. Paik's first exhibition, entitled Exposition of Music - Electronic Television, in 1963 at Galerie Parnass at Wuppertal, launched his transition from composer and performance artist to the inventor of a new art form: an engagement with the material site of television as an instrument. In the exhibition, thirteen televisions lay on their backs and sides with their reception altered; for example, Zen for TV (1963) reduced the television picture to a horizontal line and Kuba TV (1963) shrank and expanded the image on the television set according to the changing volume. In 1964 Paik traveled to the US. He quickly settled in New York and became a leading innovator among an emerging generation of artists seeking new modes of artistic expression and distribution. That same year, Paik collaborated with Shuya Abe to create Robot K-456 (1964), a remote controlled robot that played audiotaped speeches by John F. Kennedy and defecated beans in Paik's Robot Opera (1964). In the interactive work Magnet TV (1965), Paik invited viewers to modify the television's output into swerving abstract lines through the movement of a magnet over the TV. In 1967 Paik and frequent collaborator Charlotte Moorman were arrested when Moorman performed Paik's Opera Sextronique (1967), a striptease as she played the cello at the Filmmakers' Cinematheque in New York. Paik's TV Bra for Living Sculpture (1969), which Moorman wore in performances, featured two television tubes...
