Katherine Sandoz
"(Magnolia II) Thistle" - Colorful Abstract Botanical Painting - Frankenthaler

2019

About the Item

"(Magnolia II) Sky Blue" is an abstract botanical painting featuring hues of hot pink, purple, electric blue and orange. Framed in a white frame with mat measuring 27 by 27 inches. Drawing from Monet’s series of paintings of Rouen Cathedral, wherein Monet studied the changing light and character of the Gothic structure over a year’s time, Katherine Sandoz has chosen a subject that is found on the site of her permanent studio: magnolia grandiflora. “Over the past year and a half, I have studied the magnolia, its leaves and fragrant blooms over the seasons, in changing light, weather and temperatures. With many layered passages and criss-crossing of complementary colors, the canvas records some of these observations and hints at depth of this slow-growing and large evergreen.” Sandoz pays homage to the plant so cherished in the Southeast as well as to the history of painters’ endeavors. Her survey of the plant celebrates its unique beauty as she explores the physical qualities of pigments, paint and water. With these two pursuits in mind, the MAGNOLIA series offers fourteen different portraits of this ancient genus. With the marshes, waterways and people of the low-country offering perennial inspiration, Katherine Sandoz examines the quotidian and offers work that celebrates what is precious and unique. She studies, analyzes, and re-frames small moments, the mundane, neglected details of the day and the diurnal rhythms that, in turn, inspire illustrations, paintings, fibers-based works, installations and public art. Utilizing passages of transparent and opaque, warm and cool, textured and smooth layers, Sandoz creates dynamic compositions allowing the viewer to experience the subject matter from multiple vantage points at once. Sandoz' paintings and fiber works have exhibited internationally. She also creates portraits, art and installations for private clients as well as for fashion, contemporary culture and lifestyle brands. She contributes to a number of magazines and online blogs with her quirky illustrations and writing. Katherine Sandoz is inspired by the work of Helen Frankenthaler, Richard Diebenkorn, Morris Louis, Vincent Van Gogh, Willem de Kooning, Robert Motherwell and Neil Welliver.
