Ken Elliott
"Blue Wish, " Abstract Landscape Painting

2019

About the Item

This abstract impressionistic landscape painting by Ken Elliott depicts a forest of trees sitting in a blanket of snow, and a subtle sunset above the top of the forest. The thin trees' trunks are a deep violet, which are contrasted by the muted orange of the tree leaves and a yellow and peach-colored sky. The piece features the artist's signature use of bold, cool colors in the shadows with bright, warm colors for the light. The painting is signed by the artist in the lower left-hand corner of the canvas, and is wired and ready to hang. The painting is framed in a gold floater frame. The canvas is 36 x 36 and framed is 38 x 38. "This image is a pure fantasy, a tiny fragment from a larger photo of the sun setting over the ridge that day," the artist says of this piece. "There isn't a single color or shape that is native to the photo and just as well. Once I began laying out the basic design, I kept to 2-3 blues and purples. Next, the faint, setting sun had to go in and that's when things really got interesting. Up to that point, this was a monochromatic winter scene but when the warmer tones of the sun appeared, it prompted the use of pinks, rust and grey-green. Everything began to fall into place from there. It was very tempting to continue to 'polish' it up a bit, but I was very happy with the rougher look and open brushwork." Ken Elliott is an abstract landscape artist based in Colorado, whose work is included in private collections internationally. His painting titled Light Moving Across, is on loan with the Art in Embassies program and is on display in an American Embassy abroad. "My focus is the landscape and it's rich store of ideas and inspiration," Ken says. "I am compelled to work from the trees, skies, lakes and streams in their endless variations. I don’t try to recreate nature (even Monet said he never got it right) or attempt storytelling. Instead, the works are simplifications and exaggerations of nature. There was a time when I felt the tyranny of the landscape. That is, I felt limited by making pictures of a place. Now, instead of making pictures, I am free to make paintings - art that comes from nature but is far more reliant on the strategies of making good art objects. "Fortunately, I’ve learned that what some would call mistakes are part of the creative process. So, I try to begin boldly, not worrying about mistakes, using more color than might exist in nature, and varying the types of chroma and marks. During the process, I allow my vision and the inevitable missteps to become a part of the emerging image. Some of these missteps will be eliminated and the more delicious ones are incorporated into the process as unintended surprises. "Tomorrow in the studio, new oils and pastels will emerge. The fun of it all is that sometimes the pastels become new oils, oils morph into different pastels or prints. All of nature is altered, perfected and abstracted. When I run out of variations to an idea, I’ll go back to nature where all the inspirations and colors for a lifetime are always waiting.” About Sorelle Gallery: Sorelle Gallery is a woman-owned fine art gallery and art advisory firm located in Westport, Connecticut.
