Claude Verlinde
Réalisme Fantastique, L'Etabli, The Work Bench, Mid Century Fantasy Surrealist

1953

About the Item

French, réalisme fantastique, Surrealist oil on board by Claude Verlinde. Signed and dated bottom left. Presented in plain wood frame with gilt filet. A characteristic 'fantasy' work by Verlinde showing the clear influences and his love of the painters Bosch and Brueghel the Elder. The worker toiling at his bench, dressed in characteristic shirt and wearing clogs, surrounded by the tools of his trade. In the background through the open doorway a view of a fantasy landscape, stylised plants and leaves and in the far distance a group of men out hunting with a dog. Verlinde has boldly used colour and the idea of shadow to create a atmospheric and characterful painting full of charm. At an early age Claude Verlinde showed his skill as an artist. He pursued his artistic career as best he could by entering as an apprentice-sculptor in a workshop for the creation of religious motifs, then assisting the Director of the School of Fine Arts in Caen, Mr. Drouin a sculptor for the restoration of the Church of Saint-Pierre in Caen. . At the age of 17, Claude Verlinde had a revelation when he discovered, during a stay in Belgium with his Flemish paternal family, the works of J. Bosch and Brueguel the Elder. These paintings influenced his works for the rest of his life. After a time of uncertainty and of military service at the Air Force base in Dijon (where he painted a fresco in the reception room of the officers' mess) he joined the Galerie des Antiques and the Atelier de Souverbie at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He also attended anatomical drawing sessions at the Grande Chaumière. In 1955, just after he painted our picture, he moved to Vallauris. He worked as a ceramic decorator with various potters (R. Capron, Atelier du Tapis Vert where he rubbed shoulders with Prinner, whose portrait he painted, Granjean Jourdan) reserving the afternoons for his own painting. It was at this time that he met Robert Tatin, an atypical artist, who had settled in Vence in 1956. Under his influence, he practiced Art Brut for a time but decided to abandon this for his own artistic free expression. He started to exhibit his paintings through the Art de France gallery in Cannes as well as The Gallery, Bd Raspail, Paris. He returned to Paris in 1960. Freed from any other influences, he painted according to his convictions. His style asserts itself. As evidenced by his numerous writings and notes, his research is above all philosophical. He describes himself as a humanist painter. He is recognized as a master of Fantastic Realism. “His graphic acuity corresponds to his incisive and caustic spirit. From his Flemish origins, he is indebted for an earthiness that makes him the heir of Brueghel the Elder, of Bosch, of Cranach and closer to us, of Ensor. Philosopher, moralist, he composes his scenes in the form of fables with multiple readings. His parables deliver us “his reality”. Alternately disturbing and humorous, his scenes oscillate between tenderness and seriousness, caricature and poetry. Here, the human condition is dislodged from its ivory tower. Freed from all constraints, it takes the form of fantastic characters whose design allows to develop the first idea: that of a humanity caught in the meshes of its vanities...L.H. » His paintings are held in major private and national collections worldwide.

Large surrealist contemporary oil on canvas by Scottish artist Frank McLean Docherty R.S.W, signed and dated bottom left and signed and titled 'She brought Colour into his Life' to the reverse. This piece whilst wonderfully colourful, playful and erotic is typical of the witty sense of humour this artist displays in all his work. He became a student at Glasgow School of Art in 1960 and graduated from the Department of Printed Textiles in 1964. He taught in a secondary school in the East End of Glasgow for two years, thereafter departing to work in Dublin in the Republic of Ireland as a textile designer (Marks & Spencer, Heals and Liberty of London). He was also an illustrator for a range of newspapers and an Art Director of magazines. In 1973, he was appointed Principal Teacher of Art in a Scottish High School and in 1978 was honoured by the Queen when he was appointed Member of the Royal Society of Painters in Watercolours (R.S.W.) By Lazzaro Donati
    Located in Surfside, FL
Lazzaro Donati (Italian, 1926-1977) Oil on board. Colorful Architectural Italian Landscape. Porto Azzurro, 1964 Hand signed upper right. signed, titled on back of panel. Dimensions: (Frame) H 37" x W 29", (Panel) H 27" x W 19" Lazzaro Donati was born in Florence and attended the Academy of Fine Arts. He began to paint in 1953, and in 1955 held his first exhibition at the Indiano Gallery in Florence. Within three years eleven exhibitions followed in Italy, and as his reputation grew he was invited to give major exhibitions in London, Paris, New York, Chicago, Rio de Janeiro and Montevideo. He is considered one of the foremost contemporary Italian painters and his paintings hang in museums and private collections throughout the Americas, Europe and Asia. His work is recalling the works of the french Raoul Dufy, Dunoyer de Segonzac, Francois Gall and Jean Jansem. This particular work is reminiscent of the work of Manolo Valdes. Donati lived and worked at 24 Piazza Donatello in Florence, the square where generations of artists have created works worthy of the great Florentine tradition. As you entered the narrow hallway to his studio, a gilded life-size Venetian angel beckoned you to his door. Once inside, the present faded away and you found yourself in an atelier where early masters might have worked during the Renaissance. Within, luxurious Persian rugs set off the innumerable objects d’art and antique furnishings...
