Konstantinos Papamichalopoulos
The Three Emperors, Futuristic painting triptych as a Byōbu-ē folding screen

2019

About the Item

The Three Emperors is a triptych, which Papamichalopoulos has created a Byōbu-ē folding screen. Each panel measures 150x40 cm / 59 x 16 inches. The piece is created using ink, egg-tempera, and gold leaf. Illustrative and inspired by cult comics and his time in Asia, Konstantinos Papamichlopoulos' artwork has the feel of pristine Byzantine icons, and he utilizes an expert gold gilding technique. His work is edgy, contemporary and regal all at once. This particular artwork was just on view at the Tinos Archaeological Museum in Greece. Konstantinos Papamichalopoulos is the first contemporary artist to have a solo exhibition there. Summer 2019. Konstantinos Papamichalopoulos was born in Athens, Greece in 1975. He studied painting and printmaking at the Athens School of Fine Arts, where he also received a postgraduate degree from the Digital Forms of Art programme. Currently he is a PhD candidate at the Panteion University of Social and Political Sciences. Papamichalopoulos is a contributing illustrator for Babel and Mov magazines, and worked with Eleftherotypia and The Vima newspapers. He is the cover artist of the Athens Review of Books and he also is a freelance illustrator at the Dutch De Groene Amsterdammer. His latest published books are The Japanese 3 and Talos. In 2003, he was commissioned by the Benaki Museum for a portrait of the benefactor Andonis Benakis, and in 2004 his work became part of the museum's permanent collections. His work can be found in various public and private collections both in Greece and abroad. He has had solo exhibitions at the Vorres Museum, known for their contemporary collection of Greek artists, and the National Archaeological Museum, both in Athens.

Like many of her works, “Ermine” balances light and dark, magic, sensuality, life, the sacred and profane. Fun fact about the symbols: Ermine (also called stoat and weasel) refers to the species during its winter white colour phase. This arctic animal...
