About the Item

It is imperative to say that one cannot separate the African culture and the use of proverbs. Prof. Chinua Achebe who was a novelist, poet, and one of the dominant figures of modern African literature, defined proverbs in his book Things Fall Apart as "the palm oil with which words are eaten". This means that proverbs are essentially words of wisdom. Proverbs are the wisdom of a people in a nutshell. A complex story and situation are concentrated in a few words and phrases which capture and retain the essential meaning of the experiences from which they emanate. Proverbs help in the teaching of wisdom and life moral lessons. Thus they contain, and are used to convey, moral lessons and advice on how to live a better and successful life. Beyond the usual recitation, it is important to always know the appropriate event and time to use proverbs in order to communicate the appropriate message and achieve the desired result. Here is a proverb from where I come from (Ika South, Delta State, Nigeria) "Ndi chan okwu ekuruni Oba , abiesini ndi gbe ncha y’eru", which translates as Those who washed their legs did not meet the Oba (King), let alone those who rubbed soap on sponges. Indirectly, at the deeper underlying level, this proverb connotes that punctuality is the soul of business and that there is urgency and a time limit for any achievement. About Artist Nkem Odeh-Ifeyinwa is a visual artist born in Ile - Ife, Osun State but from Ika - the South Local Government Area of Delta State, Nigeria by origin. He is a graduate of the Fine and Applied Art Department also known as the Ife Art School of Obafemi Awolowo University. Nkem's expressions hover around Figurativism. He executes this art genre mostly in mixed media, where he juxtaposes newsprints, oil paints, acrylics Conte and pastels to create his forms and elucidate his visual expressions. These include his life experiences, societal issues, and also nature and its beauty. He is currently exploring the use of discarded aluminum foil and other painting mediums to document and tell stories that are based on his visual experience. His exploration further underscores the importance of recycling, waste, and Junk to Art.
