2000

About the Item

"Gary" is an original acrylic painting on parchment signed and dated in the lower right by the artist Reginald K. Gee. It is also signed and dated on verso. This painting depicts a man of the cloth sitting at a piano and playing as color fills the background and foreground. This painting was completed in Gee's signature Neo-Expressionist style. 33" x 28" art 40 3/4" x 36" frame Reginald K. Gee was born in Milwaukee on April 28, 1964 to Native American and African American parents and spent most of his childhood on the northwest side of Milwaukee in the Havenwoods neighborhood. Gee has been creating art since 1982, and his professional art debut began in 1986 at an outdoor exhibition at Milwaukee’s Performing Arts Center. Gee is primarily self-taught. He refers to himself as a visionary Neo-Expressionist. Like the Neo-Expressionists, his work is characterized by its raw depiction of subjects, the use of textural and expressive brushwork and intense colors. According to Sotheby’s auction house, Neo-Expressionist art, “[a]s a reflection of the postmodern world,” is characterized by a “sense of tension, alienation and ambiguity” and is “often accompanied by playfulness and parody.” Gee counts among his artistic influences Pablo Picasso, Francis Bacon, Willem de Kooning, Jean-Michel Basquiat, and David Salle. He is a brilliant colorist who has produced a body of work numbering in the hundreds, including a series of pastels on brown paper bags executed from 1999-2007, some of which were among the works shown at a 25-year retrospective at the David Barnett Gallery in 2013. The artist has been featured at the Outsider Art Fair in New York, the National Black Fine Arts Show, and the Chicago Black Art Expo. In 2002, two of Gee’s paintings, The Inspiration and Honest Crowd, were selected for inclusion in a Smithsonian traveling exhibition honoring the legacy of Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Another Gee painting, Nationwide Tobacco Ban, c 1998, was chosen for a campaign against smoking sponsored by the American Lung Association. According to the Milwaukee Journal in 1999, the artist had a spiritual epiphany that compelled him to move to San Francisco, start a ministry among the homeless, and continue to pursue the art career he began in Milwaukee.

  • "Man Wearing Crown in Water", acrylic, paper, myth, loss, humanity, surrealist
    Located in Toronto, Ontario
"Man Wearing Crown in Water" is an acrylic paint and mixed media on paper, by Brooklyn, New York artist Dale Williams. It measures 50" high by 38" wide. This artwork is part of a new ongoing series called "Humans Without Warning". Typical of the artist's practice, it is mythic and humanitarian all at once, striking several political and spiritual notes as well. From Dale Williams – "The figures of Humans Without Warning arrive with little forethought. They soon reveal their troubled and antic states of being. They began at the start of the COVID pandemic and explore shared vulnerabilities in a time of political and social disunity. If I am mindful of any of their attributes as I work on them, it is surely how the figures mirror the losses many of us have experienced over the past two years, and the accompanying trudge which often finds us stumbling into numbness." From George Del Barrio (2018), Vanderbilt Republic, Brooklyn NY: "Williams acknowledges a large range of influences on his vision: the moral lessons embodied in the works of 17th century engraver Jacques Lagniet, the darkling phantasms and tragic reportage of Goya’s Caprichos and Disasters of War, and the personal mythologizing of the late paintings of Philip Guston. Such works echo throughout Williams social surrealist re-visioning." Dale Williams has exhibited in the New York City area for over 25 years. He is a 2014 recipient of a Fellowship in Printmaking/Drawing/Book Arts from the New York Foundation for the Arts. His recent one-person show, “America Now Suite,” which re-visioned American history in service of the civic imagination, was held at Gowanus Loft, Brooklyn in October 2018. A selection of portraits from “America Now Suite” was included in the BRIC Biennial, Winter/Spring 2019. His portrait of Osip Mandelstam...
