About the Item

"Hallman's" is a landscape with figures and farmhouse, by American Impressionist painter Albert Van Nesse Greene. The painting is a 13.5" x 19.5" pastel on paper, matted, framed under glass, and estate stamped on verso. Provenance: Private Collection, Doylestown, Pennsylvania. Image: Portrait of the artist Albert Van Nesse Greene. Courtesy of Historic Yellow Springs, Inc. Chester Springs, PA, The Moore Archives and Roland Maynard. Albert Van Nesse Greene was born in Jamaica, NY and moved to Philadelphia in 1917. He served during World War I and was severely injured during his deployment. In the 1920s he traveled to France and studied at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière. He painted sailboats and harbors in Concarneau and became friends with other American painters such as, Edgar Payne. While abroad, Greene was greatly influenced by the work of Claude Monet and Edgar Degas. While studying at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, A.V. Greene excelled as a student under Daniel Garber and Hugh Breckenridge. He assisted Garber at the Yellow Springs Summer School and became a good friend of Newell Convers (N.C.) Wyeth. Greene would occasionally visit Garber in Lumberville, Pennsylvania and paint landscapes along the Delaware River in Bucks County. An avid AV Greene collector and past owner recalls: "One of the long-running traditions at Yellow Springs was the annual Antique Show. Dealers were scattered throughout the village and bars with food stations were set up at each exhibit; Lumineers lit the paths. The Antique Show was always festive and fun, reminding visitors of the magic that surrounds Yellow Springs. I purchased my first work of art by Albert Van Nesse Greene at the Antique Show from Betty Titone. It was a beautiful pastel of the Hallman family's property with figures and architectural elements. The Hallman's owned the General Store in Yellow Springs and were generous supporters of Greene throughout his time in the area." His paintings were exhibited extensively in the United States and France. Examples of his work can be found in the collections of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and the National Gallery of Art among many others. He was a member of the Philadelphia Sketch Club, Society of Independent Artists, and the Yellow Springs Artists Association in Chester County. He exhibited with the Society of Washington Artists, the Pennsylvania Academy, and the Salons of America.

Frame size: 20.75"H x 17"W Image size: 14"H x 10"W Gregory Ivan McHuron (American, 1945-2012) was a plein-air painter working in oil and watercolor/gouache. He was born in Syracuse NY but was raised in Colorado, Wyoming, Alaska and California. His education included 4 years of extensive high school training by a teacher who graduated from the Berlin Art Academy. He also attended Oregon State University where he took classes in forestry, fisheries and wildlife and graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Art from Oregon State University. Introduced to plein-air painting in oil in 1973 by Conrad "Connie" Schwiering, he quickly found that he enjoyed painting the rapidly changing scenes. It allowed him to put in his paintings the feelings and excitement that he felt while watching the scene unfold which created more drama and excitement than he would have been able to do in a studio environment. He has traveled widely including much of Alaska; in wilderness areas in WY and CO; down the Colorado River through Grand Canyon NP; to British Columbia and Alberta, Canada; and on extended boat trips along the west coast from Port Ludlow, Washington to Glacier Bay, AK going in and out of the fjords. He honed his understanding and knowledge of animals not only from college classes he took but also from the everyday study and observation of the wildlife in the Jackson, Grand Teton NP and Yellowstone NP areas. In addition for many years, he drew and studied wild animals at the Okanagan Game Farm in Penticton, British Columbia, Canada. Every summer and fall a group of artists would go to the Game Farm kibitzing, painting and drawing the wildlife. He taught workshops, gave demonstrations and participated in quick-draws for a variety of organizations including Wyoming Artists Association, Wind River Artist Association, Scottsdale School of the Arts, The Lodge at Palisades, National Museum of Wildlife Art, CM Russell Show, Grand Teton National Park and Isle Royale...

  • "Couple on Bench at the Beach" Pastel on Paperboard signed by Francesco Spicuzza

"Couple on Bench at the Beach" is an original pastel drawing on paperboard by Francesco Spicuzza. The artist signed the piece in the lower left. This drawing depicts two figures sitting on a bench in front of a body of water. The artist used mostly pastel colors for this piece. 6 7/8" x 9 7/8" art 18 1/2" x 21 3/8" frame Francesco J. Spicuzza, born in Sicily on July 23, 1883, came to America at the age of 8. He supported himself as a fruit peddler until a newspaperman gave him $4 a week to go to school. He attended classes at the Milwaukee Art Students League, where he studied under Alexander Mueller. There he learned to paint in the then-fashionable "Munich School" technique, with detailed realism in heavy browns and grayed-out hues. Spicuzza completed eight grades in four years, and then in 1911, three businessmen advanced him enough money to allow him to study in New York under artist and teacher John Carlson. It was during this time that Spicuzza changed his style of painting, developing an impressionistic use of color, form and atmospheric renditions. After a period of grinding poverty, one of Spicuzza's pictures won a major New York competition. It was the first of 60 wins, both in the U.S. and Paris. He became a fashionable painter, and many of the leading collections have his work. Spicuzza's typical works were beach scenes, still life, landscapes and portraits done in pastels, oils, ink, charcoal and watercolors. Much of his work traced the history of Milwaukee in the early 1900s. He was probably best known for his scenes of women and children splashing in the waves...
